You're thinking of Ricky Nelson. However, Cliff Richards is a British pop star who had a couple hits here years ago. Just saw a story on Reuters news about him.

Jay Ward-The Beev

Nope, that'd be Jerry Mathers. Jay Ward was the creator of Rocky & Bullwinkle, Underdog, Tennessee Tuxedo, etc. etc.

Heywood Brown

Is this supposed to be Heywood Broune, as in Heywood Hale Broune? CBS news reporter back in the 60's , and author of some small note.

Otherwise, I didn't recognize any other names.

Oh yeah, yer right. Maybe Cliff was the one who had that song `She`s just a devil woman` or something like that, yes?

You're all doing OK. Asnevior is no doubt spelled wrong, but it was a right answer. And yes, thank you, it IS heywood BROUN. Anyway, I'm listing more names I wanted to in the beginning. They are...

Celeste Holm-Harvey Keene-Franklin Ajay-Tommy Ivo-Bob Dobbalina-Phil Proctor-Sheldon Leonard-Jack E. Leonard-Danny Cedrone-Dagmar-Josephine Baker-Sally Rand-Candy Barr-Neville Brand-Rusty Warren-Rusty Hamer-Woody Woodbury-Duncan Renaldo-Thelma Ritter-Bruno Hauptmann-Parley Baer-Elijah Cook Jr.-James Ingram-Robert Benchley-Oscar Levant.

John D. Loudermilk was an all around composer, having also penned Bobby Vee's hit "Stayin' In". he also released several recordings himself, getting to the top 40 with "Language of love" and "Road Hog" in the late '50's. I'll give the answers at a later date, but most of the answers so far are on the mark.

Thanks to Flemtone for pointing out my goof--Harper Lee it was!

I don't believe Celeste Holm was in "The Best Years of Our Lives", will have to dig out my tape.

Robert Benchley writing "Les Miserables"? How old do you think that makes his son, Peter? Robert was also a writer and member of the Algonquin Round Table, along with other listee Dorothy Parker.

I knew James Ingram would be tricky; there is a singer with the name. But, I was referring to James Ingram the African-American actor from the '30's and beyond. It's the same problem with the name Hank Ballard, which is the name of a popular country singer of the past. But it is also the name of the black R&B singer who originated the "Twist" before Chubby Checker ever saw an audience.

From www.reelclassics.com :

...THE BEST YEARS OF OUR LIVES (1946) about post-war readjustment to civilian life). Holm's performance as the sophisticated and witty spinster fashion editor almost single-handedly rescued the film from collapsing under its heavy social message. As a result, Holm took home the Oscar for the year's Best Supporting Actress.

"I had thought, before tonight, that I had already received the greatest award that an actress can have, which is to play a part in a picture in which one so whole-heartedly believes as GENTLEMAN'S AGREEMENT. Thank you everybody for making this happen."
-- Celeste Holm's acceptance speech, 20th Annual Academy Awards

20 March 1948, Shrine Civic Auditorium, Los Angeles, California

BTW - I completely forgot to mention her role as the grandmother on the 1990's "Touched By An Angel" spinoff-of-sorts, "Promised Land"

Robert Benchley writing "Les Miserables"? How old do you think that makes his son, Peter? Robert was also a writer and member of the Algonquin Round Table, along with other listee Dorothy Parker.

Shipped as cabin boy on the Florence J. Marble, 1815.

Arrested for bigamy and murder in Port Said, 1817. Released, 1820.

Wrote A Tale of Two Cities.

Married Princess Anastacia of Portugal, 1831.

Children: Prince Rupprecht and several little girls.

Wrote Uncle Tom's Cabin, 1850.

Editor of Godey's Lady's Book, 1851-56.

Began Les Miserables, 1870, finished by Victor Hugo.

I see this thread sank to the bottom of the page, and decided to put up the answers. several of you did well, but there are no winners, because it wasn't a contest. Just some semi-fun to pass the time.

Jimmy Hatlo . Cartoonist/creator of "They'll Do It Every Time" and "Little Iodine"

Elijah McCoy Inventor of railcar lube system that was so reliable, it was asked for by name. Immitators were so bad, the prase "the real McCoy" was dubbed.

Gregg Toland Cinematographer

WeeGee Back in the late '30's became the first "street photographer".

Dorothy Parker Writer/poet/Algonquin member noted for quick wit and sharp tounge. My favorite quote comes from when she and another lady reached an exit at the same time. The other lady gestured to the door and said, "Age before beauty." Parker walked through replying, "Pearls before swine!"

John D. Loudermilk Singer/songwriter

Charles Asnevior Still misspelled, but singer/actor from France

Cliff Richards Pre-Beatles English pop star. Still touring, but last "hit" in US was in early '80's, "We Don't Talk Anymore"

Percy Helton Short, bald and chubby character actor with distinctive voice. Was the one who pointed up to Butch and Sundance's hotel window, and was also the drunken Santa in original "Miracle on 34th Street".

Robert Crumb Cartoonist and creator of "Mr. Natural" and yes, the "Cheap Thrills" cover.

Jay Ward Creator of "Rocky & Bullwinkle" and others.

Heywood Broun Didn't know he reported news. Knew about his sportswriting and the quote, "Sports don't build character, they reveal it."

Antal Dorati Long time music director of the Minnesota Philharmonic and Detroit symphony, and was a long time friend of composer Bela Bartok

Madcat Ruth Blues harpist supreme.

Ish Kabibble Goofy comic foil of Kaye Kyser's "College of Musical Knowledge".

Marion Lorne Comic actress from the "Gary Moore Show" and Aunt Clara from "Bewitched".

Brandon Cruz Yep. Eddie from "The Courtship of Eddie's Father", TV version. (Ron Howard did the movie.)

Josh White Bluesman of old. Son JR. does blues/folk type stuff.

Leon Ames Character actor. Among many roles was Judy Garland's Dad in "Meet Me In St. Louis".

Guy Kibee Another bald, chubby character actor, but in the '30's.

Mae Busch Actress did indeed play Oliver Hardy's wife in many of the shorts.

Charlie Chase Silents AND talkies comic actor.

Harper Lee Got it right, this time. Penned "To Kill A Mockingbird".

Celeste Holm I'll insist you're thinking of Myrna Loy in "Best Years", but DID win Oscar for "Gentleman's Agreement".

Harvey Keene Might be misspelled, but played for the Detroit Tigers in mid '50's. Don't know for who after that.

Franklin Ajay Black actor and comic. Yeah, he WAS funny!

Tommy Ivo Drag racer and sometimes TV actor. In fact, was nicknamed "TV" Tommy Ivo.

Bob Dobbalina Ficticious name kicking off the old Monkee's tune "Zilch".

Phil Proctor Comedian from The Firesign Theater. Man, those guys are great!

Sheldon Leonard Tough guy actor from the '40's, Nick from "Wonderful Life", and later TV producer winding up with more money than God.

Jack E. Leonard Insult comic who preceded, and in my opinion, SUPERCEDED Don Rickles.

Danny Cerdrone It disappoints me deeply that none of you who visit the Guitar Forum didn't get this one. Cedrone was the guitarist of Bill Haley's Comets who gave us that legendary solo on "Rock Around The Clock". And died WAY too young. SHAME on you!!

Dagmar Blonde "B" movie actress from the '50's known more for her "rack" than her talent.

Josephine Baker African American dancer/singer from late '20's and through '30's. Her dance style was considered too "suggestive" for white audiences of the day, but she became the toast of Paris. And, she was a good example to explain the phrase "Black is Beautiful."

Sally Rand Exotic dancer known for her peek-a-boo dance with big fans of white feathers.

Candy Barr 1940's stripper who was reduced to "starring" in porno smokers in the '50's.

Neville Brand Audie Murphy was the most decorated soldier in WWII and became an actor. Brand was the SECOND most decorated soldier, and became an even better actor. Well respected in character roles.

Rusty Warren Ribald comedienne famous for urging the ladies in the audience to, "Bounce your BOOBIES!"

Rusty Hamer Ill fated actor who played Dany Thomas' son on "Make Room For Daddy".

Woody Woodbury '50's and '60's comic who did routine from a piano.

Duncan Renaldo TV's "Cisco Kid".

Thelma Ritter Tiny but tough talking character actress. Was Jimmy Stewart's masseuse(?) in "Rear Window".

Bruno Hauptmann Convicted in the "Baby Lindberg" case, and executed.

Parley Baer Character actor was Mayor on "The Andy Griffith Show".

Elijah Cook Jr. Short charactor actor usually played would-be tough guys. Was in "The Big Sleep", "The Maltese Falcon" and was gunned down by Jack Palance in "Shane".

James Ingram Already mentioned. Can't be sure, but I think he played Uncle Reemus in Disney's "Song of The South".

Robert Benchley Mentioned also. Writer of New Yorker articles and essays. also did some acting.

Oscar Levant As witty as he was at playing piano, Levant did acting, talk show hosting and WAY to many perscription drugs.

Kudos to those who nailed as many as possible, and even those who answered wrong get thanks for trying. I know I'd probably miss a lot of names in a list some of YOU might put up, so no judgements here. Hope y'all enjoyed it somewhat.

Off the top of my head:

2. Marcia Wallace: I'm thinking she's an actor who appeared on Newhart.

5. Antoine de Saint-Exupery: Author of "The Little Prince" and at least one other book. I believe he was the illustrator as well.

10. Sandman Sims: A dancer of some renown who, in later days, "escorted" rejected contestants off the stage on "Showtime at the Apollo."

4. Piers Anthony: I think I know this one! I do! I just don't remember. :confused::freak:

Marcia Wallace - receptionist on the Bob Newhart show, and the voice of Ms Crabapple (Bart's teacher) in The Simpsons

Jeffrey Jones - Principal Ed Rooney in 'Ferris Bueller's Day Off (and myriad other films, including Amadeus)

Piers Anthony - Fantasy author, noted for the Xanth series

Antonio de Torres Jurado - Guitar innovator of the mid-1800s.

Richard Haydn - Actor - appears in dozens of movies - remember the Transylvanian local who delivers The Box to Gene Wilder(as Fredrick Frankensteen, not Froedrick Frankenstein) in Wilder's introductory scene of Young Frankenstein.

Sandman Sims - Not sure about this one - didn't he start the practice of sprinkling sand on a surface and 'soft-shoe' dancing on it?

Good answers, thus far.

An extra point to Flemtone for mentioning Marcia Wallaces current career, voicing characters on The Simpsons as well as her Bob Newhart character. :thu:

Sandman Sims is one of the most famous hoofer's after Bill "Bojangles" Robinson. He did, indeed, put sand on his dance floor to enhance slides in his tap.

Jeffrey Jones came to mind because Lilly's been watching Beetlejuice over and over. :D (He plays Winona Ryder's father.

Richard Haydn did play Herr Faulkstein in Young Frankenstein as well as Uncle Max in The Sound Of Music, among other roles.

Believe it or not, Flem, I didn't think of Xanth when listing Piers Anthony. He came to mind from the Incarnations of Immortality series. ;)

Torres is THE man in modern classical guitar construction. He's credited with popularizing and improving the 6 string, 19 fret design and scale length of the guitar.

Good job, guys! Next up!

Yo, Neil...

Arrgh! I didn't remember the name Herr Faulkstein (but it's such a great movie, I thought I had the damn thing memorized!)

And, regarding Piers Anthony, I read a bunch of the Xanth books, then started considering them 'books by the pound' when the writing just got a little too cutesy for me. I've read a couple of other series' by Anthony, but not the Incarnations of Immortality series. Do you recommend it?

I'll try it (or pass it by) depending on your recommendation.

Thanks, my brother.

Incarnations of Imortality is an interesting combination of philosophy and sci-fi/fantasy. Piers Anthony couldn't get straight philosophy books published. The publishers only wanted more Xanth books. So he combined the two. ;)

The first book, On A Pale Horse, deals with various concepts of death. It's an excellent story and a wonderful read. Haven't read it in 2 decades... It's about time to re-read it, I think. ;)

I read one or two others. The one about time was interesting, however, the friend that turned me on to On A Pale Horse, when it was one of two that had been released, indicated the series faltered more with each new release. I've seen this criticism from others as well.

I think I'll finally read the entire series now and decide for myself. ;)

My bad about the Piers Anthony! *sigh* As I wrote that I knew it, and forgot it, there were two books ("orn" and "ox") on a bookshelf less than an arm's reach from where i sat.

But I haven't read them; they belong to my girlfriend.
