Slowly
I thought Whites Stripes would be a topic. I thought their performance at the Grammy's was a threat to keyboardist and bass players everywhere. Kcbass "Let It Be!"

whitefang
Y'know, that's the second time I heard some remark about the White Stripes and bass players. I missed them on the Grammy's, and STILL haven't heard any of their music. Gotta find some online somewhere, just to listen. I "radio surf" too much to catch them, I suppose. Do they really need to "get a bass player!"? Whitefang I started out with NOTHING...and I still have most of it left!

Really love the guitar playing on both the Grammys and the CD. deanmass
Well, I was whining hard over on the grammy thread about Phil's comments. I think White Stripes are exciting and refreshing. A bass player would help them live. This past spring, I saw them twice in Detroit, and they were both great shows, but the first night they were totally on, the 2nd not so much. They did rock the house. Fang, email me. I live really close to you.. deanmass@mac.com
nhcomp45aol.com
The vocals have a Bono tone but picture Bono screaming wild out of key like someone was beating him to death with a baseball bat. Thats what the Grammy performance sounded like. It's hard to enjoy that sort of sound,The drummer was OK but the guitar work no better than any twenty year old at my local jam night, Paul. doc taz
Personally, I don't see the appeal. I mean, the whole thing seems contrived to me. Don't get me wrong, being quirky can be an asset, but few groups pull this off well IMHO. I wonder if they'll be around long enough to really go beyond the buzz. If they last at least three albums, I might eat my words, but I ain't feelin' it. I don't see anything spectacular with the drumming, guitar playing or the singing. I felt like blowing up the guy's Orange stacks when I saw the Grammy performance, and stealing the Fender combo for myself. I have heard some of the classic blues artists who do play in a similar fashion, and I don't feel it from the Stripes at all. I'm not saying they're trying to emulate them necessarily, but again, no feelin'. Too much hype, to me. sevenstring.org profile my flickr page
RobT
Maybe they don't need to get a bass player. I know I made that comment on one of the Grammy review threads. You can do what you want artistically. I just felt the bottom was missing. That's just my personal preference. They could have used keyboards or a B-3 or something to fill that sonic space. coyote
It ain't just bottom that's missing. It all just seemed (damn I must be getting old) like a noisefest. The first forty seconds of their performance were actually kinda interesting, but it just kept being more of the same... JMO of course. I used to think I was Libertarian. Until I saw their platform; now I know I'm no more Libertarian than I am RepubliCrat or neoCON or Liberal or Socialist. This ain't no track meet; this is football. Rog
I had a similar reaction when I first saw them ... "Wha?!? no bass player?!!!?!?!?!" As the days turned into weeks and then into months, as the leaves turned a golden colour and then winter crept in, only then did I finally think to myself, "no bass player? who really gives a fuck?" I smiled to myself and then I listened to Elephant once more. The End. "That's what the internet is for. Slandering others anonymously." - Banky Edwards. I mostly listen to gospel and I'm sick of all the guitar driven gospel we get here in the N.W. Checking their web site, they have 18 albums, though some appear to be cd singles. Sounds like you guys don't really care for them. Kcbass "Let It Be!"
Blue Strat
I really like The White Stripes. So they don't have a bass player. So they aren't that technical with their playing. Who cares? Not I. It's their songs that draw me in, and I'd assume that's what other folks like to hear too. Jack's guitar playing is also great even though it's not all that technical. It fits the songs perfectly, IMO. I missed the Grammy awards show, but from most of the comments here I didn't miss much except for Prince and the White Stripes. Jack White usualy plays through a Silvertone 6 x 10" stack and a silverface Twin. BlueStrat a.k.a. Mark Zeger
IIRC, there is an "underground" album from a bass player who took the first White Stripes album and added his own bass parts. Clever idea. Anyone ever hear it?

AlanThomas
The Grammy show was the first time I've ever seen The White Stripes live. I think that particualr song is okay, but I really don't understand what the buzz about them is. Maybe I'm just old and jaded, but I don't think they present anything particularly original. I can remember seeing very similar acts 10 and even 20 years ago. And the same "What? No bass player?" type of discussions were around then too. Not that their performance wasn't enjoyable, but I think they're a prime example of how the marketing and promotion department drives the music industry, not talent or creativity. But I knew that... KenElevenShadows
The buzz? I dunno what all that's about, but they're refreshing in the sense that it's good guitar playing, good songs, and it doesn't sound like all the rest of the rock that's out there right now, and it's recorded on analog 8-track, which is kinduva refreshing change. Admittedly, the buzz is a bit much, but the guy is undoubtedly quite talented, and hopefully he'll be giving us some more good music in the future. And yes, I'm totally aware of the fact that it's not the newest kind of music under the sun, but when you consider what's out there right now, with everything Pro Tooled to death, it really is quite refreshing - at least, to me... PBBPaul
The only thing I like about the White Stripes is their breakout tune - Son House's "Death Letter". I've been playing that tune for 20 years and it's always been one of my faves. As for the Stripes? eh... They don't do much for me.
