Gee whiz....I never sat though so many frigging commercials in my life and I was channel hopping a lot and still sat through more commercials than I did in a month. Every product known to mankind was advertised tonite and every CBS TV show was plugged to death.

Beyonce wrecked a bunch of Prince tunes, he should have performed solo, because there was nobody that night that could hold a candle to Prince live.

Then she spent 5 minutes wailing the words "I love you". Who the F, writes her "music". Just brutal. I guess that's why the built the overpriced set, just so there would be something to divert the attention from this horrible tuneless song.

Outkast was great. Period.

As were EWF, and the rest of the Funk segment. Those complaining it was a mess just don't get live interaction, and there's more to performing than having autotuned vocals sung to perfect backing tapes. THAT'S what music is about. Not always perfection.

Burt, Dave Matthews was pathetic in that Beatles bit with Sting just a bit better. I guess singing songs with real melodies is a bit out of reach for Dave and his rambling.

Great drumming by the Neptunes guy though.

Overall, I enjoyed the Grammy Awards this year more than most. For once, it seemed that the performances were the focal point rather than the awards themselves; and I liked hearing the music speak for itself. It's true than some of the pairings (Chick Corea and Foo Fighters, for example) were rather odd and didn't quite deliver; but at least the Grammy Awards took the kind of risks that one rarely sees the major labels take. Bravo!

My disappointments were few. First and foremost was the fact that lifetime achievement winners weren't allowed to walk to the stage and say a few words. However, one can't have it both ways. More talking would have meant less music; and tonight, more music was mostly a good thing. The technical problems were frustrating as well, but they didn't wreck the night for me.

On a personal note, I was very touched to see Richard Marx win Song Of The Year honors as co-writer of Luther Vandross' "Dance With My Father." I had the pleasure and privilege of working with Dick Marx (Richard's father) on a number of occasions, and I was very sad when he died in an auto accident a few years ago. Dick was a very kind and talented man, who spoke proudly of his son. "Dance With My Father" is a stirring tribute. I can't help but get choked up every time I hear it. (Of course, the additional fact that Luther Vandross has been struggling to recover from a stroke only increased how moved I was at watching "Dance With My Father" win the award.)

Best,

Geoff

Sadly (well not really), I missed the awards (there were three 0r four back to back episodes of Law & Order!)

I'm sure only the most seasoned audio people are used at events like these. Guess what, shit can still happen. That it occured so many times in one night on one of the largest live sound stages in the USA is a telling sign of the REAL world, versus a sanitized, 10 take scenario in the studio.

How many times have I checked and double checked my 8 wireless, plus the two wireless spare plus the four hard wire backups BEFORE the show, only to lose 3 or 4 of the wireless 2 minutes into the show?

Each and every one of those performers on stage (Celine, Prince, Sting etc etc) have hadmore bad nights than many of us have had live shows. It is entirely possible that for those that were there (spectators, performers) it was not that bad.

That aside, it is refreshing to hear from colleagues than watching on tv. Almost akin to listening to a baseball game on the radio versus watching on TV.

Keep the commentary flowing!

NYC Drew - I understand where you are coming from and my comment about the sound people was in jest. Bad nights, equipment failures...just plain stuff happens.

The show was actually better than I thought. It was the first time I've actually wanted to watch the Grammys in years.

The funk segment was great. It was good to see them get some props. Not the greatest broadcast sound but great to see nonetheless. The wife and kids have talking about Outkast and that Hey Ya video for a couple of months. I think they had one of the best performances. I hadn't seen it nor heard it until last night.

The comments about the way Prince dressed!?! The dude is growing old gracefully. He still kicks.

Beyonce' & Prince, Alicia Keys, EW & F/Outkast/Parliament segments were highlights. everything else was wack! It was funny seeing Pharell playing drums though with Sting & Co. during the Beatles tribute segment. Although he stuck out like a sore thumb he was pretty solid!

most disturbing thing for me was that I COULDN"T HEAR Robert Randolph's slide!! Damn - what's up with that? It should have been SCREAMING! I really wanted to hear this guy, and how hard is it to make a guitar loud?

But the rest of it - I say - lighten up, and be glad there was so much ACTUAL PERFORMING going on - I was impressed with that - and the EWF/PF grooves were right on. Not easy to be shot out of the cannon in a hodgepodge melee like that and make it feel centered - I thought they did great.

Samual Jackson is a great actor and orator - nothing wrong with that IMB.

Sting....maybe yeah we all need a break, he is great etc. but so what? - takes himself too seriously, but I dug the kilt.

gotta ask out of perverse curiousity - what is the .50 deal? - I missed that

ok

I didn't watch much, the Pro Bowl was on at the same time!

What I saw during the game's breaks was OK, but not amazing by any stretch.

Add the girl who sang the national anthem at the Pro Bowl to some of the singing at the Grammys and I'll have to say -

Nice show! Like the pretty much anti lip-sync format. It did have some bumps along the way, but Celine is a veteran, and sometimes the best performances come from when you're challenged instead of bored.

Prince & Bouncee were the highlight's of the night. It was Beyonce's night, and nobady can take Prince when it comes to performing. Prince looks like he's got another 12 years in him of performing on that level. Please...please..please release the true vault tapes!! Speaking of which, I do agree, Beyounce needs great songs. maybe last night moves some label people to go ahead and spend the extra money and call in the better writers. That voice deserves it.

The Luther tribute moment that stood out for me was just after they showed Luthers taped speech, hard on the heart strings to watch, but the look of shock on Prince's face just after seeing Luther speak was all telling.

The Funk tribute mixed with Outkast(Big Boi)was pretty much just ok. Ive heard EWF's best moments were in the rehearsals last week. P-Funk was ok as well, Anyone who's a P-Funk fan knows that group is rarely ever great on TV.....better seen in a dark loud venue over a 3 hour period!

Alicia Keys had an early blunder in House Is Not A Home, but recovered nicely. Maybe it was me, but she didn't seem to be really playing the piano.

God, I so wished Hey-Ya was done with a live band at the end, which band I don't know, but it was missing that raging drummer on a huge riser vibe. The Marching band/drumline thing didn't work as had hoped, and that "Indian" vibe seemed so cheap.

Christine sounded pretty good, but looked like Mae West's daughter, her skin looks like it hurts straining on top of all that rubber cement in her chest.

Fiddy Cent is an asshole who raps/mumbles monotone at best.

Patti Labelle is a blessing...period.

TROLL . . . ish.

Yeah. The Purple One looked like he had tears in his eyes.

LOL! I thought I was hearing things. A couple of parts where the piano did some fills higher up the scale she didn't appear to go up the scale with what was being played. Her hands seemed to stay in the middle position of the keyboard. I thought I was hearing/seeing things. I'm glad somebody else caught that...

I was hoping for that too especially after seeing the video for the first time.

Was she looking for the melody line?

The girl has a voice for sure

...but a shes bit short on individual singing style.

Just a lot of yooooooodle-oh-eeeee-oooooooo

Fuckin' Mariah got that shit startednow its become like the Holy Grail of R&B singing.

Take one melody noteand see how many more you can string on to it...til your lungs give out.

Alsoseems that the majority of the entertainment was focused on R&B/Rap style numbersjust like in the Super Bowl.

I guess thats whats selling mostly these days

Hmm. I looked pretty close. My verdict is that Timberlake was playing piano. At the end when he stood up and did those glisses on the piano, that was real. I watched his hand as he played those block chords. I'm pretty convinced that was him playing. Now on the other hand it's wasn't a very difficult figure he was playing, but he had good time. :D

I was actually surprised by his segment with Arturo Sandoval. He came up a notch in my estimation. Of course I know next to nada about him.

All the best,

I can't believe that White Stripes is being considered a gimmick given the other artists that made up the rest of the show.

Timberlake?

Beyonce (great voice, but the scales=soul thing grates me)

Meg is not a great drummer, given, but in the role she is perfect.

As a bass player, I saw, screw it, if they can get the thing rolling without one, more power to them...

Didn't see all of it. After Gill, Matthews and Sting butchered the Beatles tune, and seeing some guy in yellow koulatts prance around the stage yelling something or other, I went back to "Day Of The Jackle".

Could the distorted sound for Alicia and Celine have anything to do with the device that was used for the 5 minute delay? Just wondering if the problems had more to do with the network than with the sound guys. I know Ed Greene and I just can't imagine him letting that sound come out of his board. In the past it was live, so he could actually hear what was being broadcast. Does anybody really know what happened?

Hard to say for sure Dave... I don't know how they implemented the delay... but I would hesitate to blame the engineer. Crap happens, even to the best of the best, and sometimes there's nothing you can do... and sometimes it's someone else's fault. Hard to say without knowing the setup and having been there when it all went down.

One of the reasons I avoid doing live sound for anyone is I don't like having everyone look back at the FOH position when some idiot lead singer points his mic right at the monitor... sometimes even when you're not to blame, everyone blames you. I wouldn't be surprised if it was something along those lines.

But I AM curious... if you happen to talk to Ed and he tells you what happened, can you pass it along?

In regards to Maurice White of EWF looking "zoned out;" the man has been suffering from Parkinson's the last few years, and takes meds to help the tremors (like you see Michael J. Fox have). Those drugs can slow your motor control as well. Knowing this while watching EWF perform made me appreciate his even being up there on stage.

This is why he is still very much involved with the band, but mostly in a production/song writing capacity.

Confirmation that I am nuts. I do live sound because I enjoy living on the razor's edge.
