Lee Tyler
A tee-pee spaceship? Green clothed Indian gals doing 60's dances like "the pony"? A high school band clad in green belting out an accompanyment to the funk coming out from the lead singer???? All on the stage at the same town and getting the job done??? What goes on here?? EscapeRocks
I enjoyed the funk part. That Robert Randolph can sure jam on the pedal-steel! I like EWF and it was good to see Maurice White onstage....you could tell he is suffering the effects of his chronic illness. I though they did a good job with Outkast during that segment. Richard Marx and Celine showed how to be professional and carry on in the face of sound problems and no monitor. I've always loved Prince and his songwriting and arrangements. Purple Rain still gets regular play in my CD player. Did I see Maceo Parker up there backing up Prince in the horn section? michael saulnier
The story of this year's Grammy's has GOT to be the shoddy audio telecast. HOW IN THE HELL DO THEY LET THIS HAPPEN. I mean EVERYTHING must have been checked out to the nth degree before the show, right? Whoever this year's producer is... is NEVER gonna be invited back! Holy Technical Glitch, Batman! guitplayer I'm still "guitplayer"! Check out my music if you like... http://www.michaelsaulnier.com
Lee Tyler
My take on the "story" here is lack of representation of the rap/hip hop community. Agreed on the sound issues though...but....shit does happen. http://mental.inet.co.yu/mentalhig/0uvod/004/doodie/doodie101999.gif Joe Pine (60's talk show host who sported a wooden leg) to Frank Zappa -- "So, with your long hair, I guess that makes you a woman." Mark Zeger
This was the worst Grammy telecast ever. There were technical and artistic disasters from start to finish. I want those 3 hours of my life back. Who at CBS neutered Prince? When Prince performs, I want to know that something edgy can happen at any time. That wasn't going to happen tonight. I think Les Moonves chose Prince's songs and dressed him personally to make sure his pants weren't missing a seat. Dave Matthews was the vocal "sand in the Vaseline" during the Beatles tribute. He was just a poor choice to be part of that number. Vince Gill stood out strong, with additional style points for the Epiphone Casino. Pharrell on drums was a nice surprise. Whoever thought it would be a good idea to put Chick Corea together with the Foo Fighters should have been taken out behind the Staples Center and been beaten. The pairing dishonored both. I was eager to hear Chick, but his contribution detracted from the song. On a similar topic, why must they continue to trot out the oddly paired presenters like Missy Elliot and Tony Bennett, Mary J. Blige and Michael McDonald, Sean Astin and Norah Jones, etc., with lame-ass joke writing? As soon as Yoko Ono refered to The Beatles as "John and the other three", I was waiting for the uncomfortable moment when Ringo and Paul would follow her on stage. The magic of video tape spoiled that moment for me. Thanks to the engineer who completely screwed up Celine Dion's mic and in-ear monitor. You actually made me feel sorry for her, something I thought not possible. Then she turned in a very strong (and unusually understated) vocal performance following a very weak one from Alicia Keys. That was a Warren Zevon tribute? If you blinked, you would have missed it. Not to take anything away from Zevon moment of rememberance, but shouldn't there have been a Johnny Cash tribute? The funk section was a beautiful mess of sorts. Samuel L. Jackson: we get it, already...shut up and let the music speak for itself. You were faking the funk and your nose will grow. The Sarah McLaughlin and Alison Kraus performance seemed to get lost and become an almost wasted use of 2 excellent artists. Was the Sting/Sean Paul performance really necessary? Justin Timberlake's half-assed "apology" followed by a smirk and a giggle is proof enough for me that the whole Super Bowl fiasco was set up. Andy Williams There, I'm done now. pigknuckles
Props to Celine Dion for being a total pro and delivering a good performance despite the technical failures. Instead of getting shaken up or disturbed, she just dug in and sang the song. Despite all the glitz and spectacle, I thought that was by far the strongest moment of the show. Unfortunately it only strengthened the stereotype of incompetent sound crew who can't even get a simple vocal and piano mic to work. Glad it wasn't my fault (for once). Other highlights were Prince & Beyonce, EW&F with Maurice on stage and singing pretty well. PFunk was more spectacle than performance, but good to see. Outkast were funny, genius idiots. Who was playing drums for Sting? he sure played with lots of energy.
Dylan
OK, what the hell was up with Chick Corea playing with the Foo Fighters? That had to be the most bastardized musical clusterfuck that I've ever seen. Can't Chick lay low for rock music? He was all over the place. I like both artists in their own right, but c'mon!
