CEB Posted December 27, 2014 Posted December 27, 2014 I dug my 65 Twin out of storage. Decided to have my amp guy rebuild it. The speakers are not original but they are what was in it when I got it. They speakers feel mushy. I didn't start the amp without putting it on a variac. I haven't played it since 92. Any recommendation on speakers. My amp tech thinks I would like Eminence Red White and Blues. I play a Tele. Tonewise I like Pete Anderson's early work with Dwight Yoakam. Larryz Posted December 27, 2014 Posted December 27, 2014 http://fenderguru.com/amps/twin-reverb <--- here's a good article on the subject. Don't forget to "Ask Myles"...I had JBL's in mine back in the day and really loved them. I would get back to as close to stock as you can. They are a great clean amp and work great with a Tele playing a clean country style...a little too heavy as you get older like me LOL! but still one of my favorite memories... Take care, Larryz
Bartholomew Posted December 28, 2014 Posted December 28, 2014 Have a 68 silverface twin with 1971 Jensen Concert speakers and have also used JBL and Altec. Like JBL the best, Altec Lansing next but can't carry it anymore. Wouldn't touch modern Jensen made in Italy but recently put an Eminence Legend GB128 into something else. Great for classic-rock, jazz standards and Blues but not really what you want. Hard to know until it's in there but the Red White & Blue should work or maybe a Texas Heat. Been round the block but am not over the hill... http://www.bandmix.ca/jamrocker/
CEB Posted December 28, 2014 Author Posted December 28, 2014 Thanks about the tip in Jensons. I used to like the old Jensen Special Designs in the old stuff. I had looked up the recommended blackface replacements up on Jensens webpage. I take it the quality has declined. Thanks everyone. Caevan O'Shite Posted December 28, 2014 Posted December 28, 2014 JBL D120 or JBL D120F (the "F" stood for "Fender"- JBL made 'em for Fender, OEM factory-installed) would be great, if loud and heavy, speaker choices for you and your amp. Also a bit pricey, and watch out for reconed- and/or BADLY or incorrectly/unauthentically reconed- specimens. Weber makes quite a variety of alnico and ceramic magnet speakers, many with a number of options. Look over the offerings listed on their 'site and contact them with questions and requests for suggestions going by you amp, guitar, wants and needs. CEB Posted December 29, 2014 Author Posted December 29, 2014 This might be a painless decision. My amp shop has these goofy 412 cabinets in the back I never paid attention to. They are loaded with different Eminence speakers and have a selector switch for choosing the speaker you want to demo. Just plug your amp into it. Here I thought who would make a goofy cabinet with no grill. Took some before picture this weekend. I have to say my heart sunk when I took my amp out of storage after being talked into rebuilding it. It was never a beauty queen. I bought the when I was young and couldn't afford a road case then I gigged with it. But it didn't look near this bad when I stored it away. It is pretty evident moisture got to it since 92. The grill cloth was not this discolored and the top hardware wasn't rusted. But the transformers look OK. My tech says I will be amazed but the old girl looks rough. He is going to make it look good also but you know the custom shop would probably charge a couple of grand to make an amo look like this. http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y70/CEB2/Twin1_zps9ba922ef.jpg http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y70/CEB2/Twin2_zpse85d155e.jpg http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y70/CEB2/Twin3_zps8c92d82a.jpg http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y70/CEB2/Twin4_zpsb63f1d72.jpg "It doesn't have to be difficult to be cool" - Mitch Towne "A great musician can bring tears to your eyes!!! Strategery Posted January 2, 2015 Posted January 2, 2015 Wow, nice. Put some Jensens in there. That will get you back to as near to specs. Do your research on which ones though and Jensen will help you out. Best of luck, she's beaut. "Just play!"
desertbluesman Posted January 3, 2015 Posted January 3, 2015 http: I had JBL's in mine back in the day and really loved them. I had JBL's in mine also back in the day. Made the thing much heavier. I liked those speakers a big bunch back then. dbm If it sounds good, it is good !! http://www.soundclick.com/bands/default.cfm?bandID=143231&content=music
Larryz Posted January 3, 2015 Posted January 3, 2015 I think we were much younger back in the day and those JBL's with the big magnets were easier to throw around. I can't lift them up on the back of the truck any more LOL! I gigged with that amp for 3 years in a country rock band (no distortion or overdrive allowed). It took a lick'en and kept on tick'en and never failed me. It was the best amp I ever owned. 4 6L6's and lots of power. Even in the larger venues I never ran the volume past 4. Great amp for clean players who like jazz, country and old rock and roll...just don't play venues with lots of stairs LOL! ps. Clapton and BB used them for blues too! Take care, Larryz

As did Roy Buchanan, except his was always dimed. It was so loud on stage they made him put it behind the Leslie, facing upstage. But that's how he got his sound, & sustain/harmonics. Scott Fraser
Larryz Posted January 3, 2015 Posted January 3, 2015 Yeah, I have a live DVD of Roy...he turned the amp facing opposite the audience and they heard him on the back side! I have a buddy who saw him live at the San Jose Civic auditorium back in his heyday and he said it was very very loud, but still a fantastic performance! I love his rendition of Sweet Dreams by Patsy Cline which can be heard at the end of the movie The Departed. A real Fender legend on that Tele too! He's the King of the volume swells IMHO. Take care, Larryz

JBL D120 or JBL D120F (the "F" stood for "Fender"- JBL made 'em for Fender, OEM factory-installed) are great, if loud and heavy, speaker choices for blackface, silverface and such '60s/'70s type Fender amps, especially Pro and Twin Reverbs. Also a bit pricey, and watch out for reconed- and/or BADLY or incorrectly/unauthentically reconed- specimens. I have a friend who owns a fantastic silverface '67 Pro Reverb that has a pair of those JBL D120F speakers in it, factory-installed OEM's. It sounds and feels excellent! It's a badass machine for classic clean and LOUD semi-clean tones. If I ever can afford it, I might try to buy that amp from him... Larryz Posted January 3, 2015 Posted January 3, 2015 @ Caevan: My son-in-law has an old Twin, next time I get by his place I'm checking his speakers and making him an offer if it has JBL's. I'll just leave it at home on the ground floor so I don't have to move it around (those built in rollers came in very handy) LOL! @ Scott, +1 you have very good taste! One of my all time favorite instrumentals too! Take care, Larryz
Caevan O'Shite Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 So, how's the speaker hunt workin' out, CEB? Don't sweat the cosmetic wear 'n' aging on your Twin; it just makes it look more vintager! CEB Posted January 14, 2015 Author Posted January 14, 2015 I haven't moved on anything yet. I have not been in the shop lately and the tech has not called. There is a couple of goofy looking 412 cabs in the back of shop's amp room with no grill loaded with different eminence products. I can plug the amp into it and switch between different speakers. I think I will take my #1 Tele and pedalboard in and give that a try once the amp is done. A few guys at the Tele forum have spoken up for Cannibis Rex drivers (Marijuana King? LOL). I might gives those a try and what ever else is in the Eminence switchable cabinet. Texas Heats also got a vote. CEB Posted January 14, 2015 Author Posted January 14, 2015 FWIW - I had a poll at the Tele forum about the cloth replacement. The vote was 38-9 against replacing it. The consensus is "you only get to be original once." This amp is almost as old as I am. That is old. Larryz Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 A long time ago my twin which was bought used looked pretty ugly after 3 years of additional gigging. The grill cover pops right out and I just bought some black fabric spray and hit it good...The amp looked as good as it sounded. When I sold it, I still got top dollar for it. My vote is to give it a face lift unless you +1 really like that "vintager" look LOL! Take care, Larryz

The consensus is "you only get to be original once." I agree. A general clean-up all over the amp and some TLC will do wonders, without needing to replace much at all on the outside. It'll have a touch of Mojo 'n' vintage vibe while being fresh and good where it counts. CEB Posted February 6, 2015 Author Posted February 6, 2015 Getting close. Need to go through the reverb and need to retube. Voltage is good. I had the amp since around 86. I don't know it's history prior to that. It appeared to have had issue. Something got hot and there had been a hack of a repair job on the Tremolo. It is all good now http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y70/CEB2/BD1687E7-2948-421D-86DF-F2836E9114DB_zps8musaq4l.jpg "It doesn't have to be difficult to be cool" - Mitch Towne "A great musician can bring tears to your eyes!!! CEB Posted February 6, 2015 Author Posted February 6, 2015 My tech still wants to change to grille. He has old stock blackface cloth on hand. I'll see. I keeping the old cloth and speakers just in case if I let him replace the cloth. I know a guy that installed 2 Eminence Patriots, one Screaming Eagle and one Red White and Blues. I might try that but still haven't decided. I still need to get a case that will be another $200.
