Leslie 900

I know it's kind of an odd bird---but I'm about to give in to it.

I've got an Korg BX3 v.2. The sim is bad, but now I'm running a pro-3 and univox bass combo amp. Actually sounds pretty good, really good. But the lure of the Leslie is alluring.

Thoughts? Questions/comments....

It is a large 2 piece solid state road leslie. If the OD on the Korg is good you MIGHT like the 900. It will not growl on it's own. Pretty sterile. I actually like the 760, 860 and 330 etc.... better than the 900. The 900 is friggin huge in size but that is about it.

I have the little 860 and liked it because it would roll into my Taurus wagon. It didn't growl either but I used a seperate OD unit and I liked it because of it's portability. It packed larger power amps than the 900 also.

Today I would rather get a mini Vent than any old solid state Leslie.

The 900 is without slow motor on the bass rotor. It sounds a bit "dull" in chorale, but actually some prefer it this " Memphis" way. Once had a 910 and I added a slow motor on the bass rotor, quite easy as it was prewired for adding the extra motor. It is big, much to move even if the cabinet is split in two. Transistor amplifier meaning not a pleasant overdrive as on it's tube siblings. The 910 was loud, the 900 probably too.

The OD on the Korg is not great---right now I'm running it thru a line 6 guitar Pod with some decent drive, then into the pro 3 unit. If I plunge on this, I'm gonna run it thru a real tube preamp. Any ideas on the best one to warm up the 900?

Ironically I had a 760,lent it to a friend...both are gone. Live and learn...

I had 2 of them. The first was the original BK Butler Tube Driver rack unit marketed by Chandler. I still have it. It is nice for guitar when used with my 65 Twin but too fizzy for organ.

Then I got the Butler Tube Works Blue Tube rack unit. It was better. Neither of these are still available. This is some old shit. I used these with my XB-2 rig. A speakeasy preamp would sound better than both of these. But the Speakeasy won't be cheap.

A sole Ventilator will cost less than your total combined cost of a 900 plus a tube overdrive and work better than any vintage solid state leslie and preamp.

I know I didn't think I would make the switch either. I hauled those big ass rotary cabinet until May of 2014. The Vent works better through the FOH. I use a Mini Vent mounted in my rack. It sounds great through the stage monitors. The OD is the best.

A Speakeasy preamp only for the Leslie will probably cost $500+. A Mini Vent I think was around $350 new.

Have to agree with CEB, I was using my chopped 147 through a speakeasy pre amp also, sounds great, but since I started using a vent, Ive never really looked back. I very rarely use a Leslie these days and I didn't think I would ever say that .....

I got my speakeasy for $250 used, and I got my vent 1 for $175 used, they come up occasionally used for cheap. If you really want a Leslie, I would hunt around for an 860 over a 900 series, or if your really game, a 145 / 142 .

If you were near illinois i would let you have an 860 plus a xb-2 in a anvil style case for $900 for the whole rig.

Heck maybe a little less. I am getting rid a stuff I don't use. I just gave a away a working CZ-1 and case.

The bass on the 860 is not the best. But it is louder than heck. It makes a good rock cabinet and it is really small and easy to load.

I agree w/ you guys 100% as far as playing live---I use the SK1 sim--and even though I know the vent is better, I can't miss what I never had---I'm really quite happy w/ my live sound from the SK1 sans accessories.

The Leslie 900 is for home/fun/lark. I took delivery from a really nice guy, 325.00 delivered. Hooked it up to my BX3 v.2. I've tried 2 things---a cheap Bellari tube preamp, and a line 6 pod...all kinds of tweakage available there. I gotta say---I'm thrilled. I will never do a gig with this stuff, but I will record, practice and have fun with it. I'm really glad I did it. Thanks all for your input. Love this forum..and today I'm loving making some serious noise.

Sorry about. I always seem to have gigging always on the brain. Have fun with the cabinet. They are more fun when you do not need to move them. :)
