Pink Floyd Tribute

I know some of you play in pink Floyd tributes, or have before.

In St. Louis, a number of years ago, a bunch of local musicians got together and put on a Pink Floyd tribute show between Christmas and New Years. It was wildly successful and they kept doing it every year, adding more shows each year, and increasing the production. I think this year they are doing something like 6-7 shows, and they added a summer outdoor show complete with real helicopters flying overhead for another brick in the wall, pyrotechnics, and a fireworks display.

I didn't get to go this year, but typically they do 2 sets - the wall, and dark side of the moon, complete with outfits and additional actors for parts of the wall, laser show, pole dancers during young lust, etc.

I don't have any video, but a photographer just posted a bunch of pics - click through the sideshow...pretty impressive for a local act.

I know most of them, but strangely not the keyboard players. Kicking myself now - a long time ago, maybe the 2nd or 3rd year they did it, I was at a hockey game talking to the bass player who puts the whole thing together. He was saying one of the keyboard players couldn't do the show and he needed somebody. I never followed up with him. Would have been cool to get in on it.

On such things life turns. Thanks for the pics, pretty cool!

There is no luck - luck is simply the confluence of circumstance and co-incidence...

If they do a real good job , Rodger Waters will raise litigation action and trim their wings :D , happened with our top notch resident NZ Pink Floyd band .

I don't know how he could if they are paying the appropriate fees. I'm sure that's why you can't find any video of them anywhere online since that would require a mechanical license.

He made them completely shut down their cool Brick in the Wall part of their show - otherwise fees were huge I believe. Their video's are on youtube , totally excellent show and the guitarist is every bit as good as Gilmour and better.

I was wrong, there's a ton of cell phone video on youtube.

I didn't realize they had started doing shows in KC.

Great photos.... Thanks for posting them, Dan. Too bad there isn't any audio/video available.

I just joined up with an area PF tribute. They average about ten shows a year, but also work as a male/female fronted cover rock band 4-5x a month. Other than a handful of 'Floyd tunes over several years, this is the first PF tribute act with which I've worked.

A couple things learned in the past 1&1/2 weeks, with about 15 songs down and 7-8 to go: 1) Between Pink Floyd tribute bands, there are many different arrangements/interpretations of each song. This band, Echoes of Pompeii, provided a live CD of about half the songs. So most of the charts - both self produced, and generously provided by several KC members - are now full of edits. 2) The changes and parts are not terribly difficult, but getting the Rick Wright vibe down is....A big thanks to Tony O. for stressing that point right away; his patch/combination suggestions have been invaluable.

I've always liked Pink Floyd, though it was 1993 before I became a dedicated fan. This latest venture has taken things up another notch. After a few rehearsals and plenty of in-depth study, I'm at a loss for a couple of appropriate adjectives. All I can think of - at the moment - is that this music often seems to soar, and is highly transcendent.

'Someday, we'll look back on these days and laugh; likely a maniacal laugh from our padded cells, but a laugh nonetheless' - Mr. Boffo.

We need a barfing cat emoticon!

Turns out there's quite a bit on Youtube - just search El Monstero. Unfortunately, it's all cell phone video, so the sound quality is crap.

Except for the whole Gilmour WROTE THOSE PARTS thing.

Well , this is news to me , and I couldn't believe it , so I went and researched that on the net for a couple of hours - no I didn't of course.

That's why the real movers n' shakers and profiteers are the songwriters/creators , NOT the musicians (unfortunately).

+1

I can play a lot of songs/tricks/solos other people wrote. That doesn't make me "as good or better" musician than the people who have musical vision to write masterpieces (like Gilmour/Waters).

Good luck to Dan and Allan on the Floyd gigs. I've enjoyed doing it myself (especially as it has turned me into a lead vocalist -and I use that term generously).

As I've not found a musical situation here yet, I think I'm going to start by putting my NM Floyd tribute together. That will buy me some time while looking for/building my jam band. Yeah, I'm convinced it'll happen THIS year.

Of course, if I had my way...never mind, I WILL Have my way. Post some pics of your rig and the show dudes!!!!

Hitting "Play" does NOT constitute live performance. -Me.
