SEHpicker Posted December 22, 2014 Posted December 22, 2014 Oh no. Please tell me it ain't so. R.I.P. Joe - you were one of a kind. SEHpicker The further a society drifts from truth the more it will hate those who speak it." George Orwell
Scott Fraser Posted December 22, 2014 Posted December 22, 2014 Sorry to see him go. I always admired his complete avoidance of most rock & roll stereotypes. A unique voice. Scott Fraser
Larryz Posted December 22, 2014 Posted December 22, 2014 Unchain My Heart...He was one of and still is, my favorites. I'm so lucky I got to see him live in concert just a few short years ago...RIP JOE! Take care, Larryz
5 string Mike Posted December 22, 2014 Posted December 22, 2014 I really liked his rendition of "Feelin' All Right". Another musical great slipped into eternity... "Political language... is designed to make lies sound truthful and murder respectable, and to give an appearance of solidity to pure wind"- George Orwell

jimmac Posted December 22, 2014 Posted December 22, 2014 One of my favorites too. Sad to hear it. Jim
Bluesape Posted December 22, 2014 Posted December 22, 2014 Never be another like him..... Never a DUH! moment! Well, almost never. OK, OK! Sometimes never!
Guest Posted December 22, 2014 Posted December 22, 2014 Yep old Joe went, RIP Joe, you was unique......
Fred_C Posted December 22, 2014 Posted December 22, 2014 Tragic news. I really loved his arrangement of "The Letter" with that driving horn section and uptempo rhythm. I thought the original by The Boxtops was mundane in comparison. If you play cool, you are cool.
skipclone 1 Posted December 23, 2014 Posted December 23, 2014 Man, some true greats leaving us this year. He was incredible, he will be much missed. Same old surprises, brand new cliches- Skipsounds on Soundclick: www.soundclick.com/bands/pagemusic.cfm?bandid=602491
Griffinator Posted December 23, 2014 Posted December 23, 2014 [video:youtube] A bunch of loud, obnoxious music I USED to make with friends.
whitefang Posted December 23, 2014 Posted December 23, 2014 Tragic news. I really loved his arrangement of "The Letter" with that driving horn section and uptempo rhythm. I thought the original by The Boxtops was mundane in comparison. Fred, I knew a few who thought Joe WAS the former lead singer in the Box Tops( WAS it one...or TWO words?) I think it had to do with both having those raspy voices... Anyway...A unique vocalist, to say the least. And some MIGHT say, the GRANDADDY of all "air" guitarists. But with an uncanny ability to inject a LOT of soul in his vocals despite the "antics" people would like to make fun of, which proved to me that MANY, if most, people don't really pay attention to what they HEAR. Like all those folks I knew who thought Janis Joplin wasn't that great a vocalist because she..."wasn't PRETTY" But Joe could kick ass when he got going, for sure. And, as in the lyric of a song I once heard him sing... "Another brother done reached out and turned off the light!" Goodbye, Joe---And, nothing personal, but--- Hope I don't lay eyes on you again for a long, long time! And, speaking of unique vocalists, today is Eddie Vedder's birthday.... Whitefang I started out with NOTHING...and I still have most of it left!

Whitefang I agree completely with your comments. Regrettably I have no idea whether BoxTops is one word or two. Don't know. Don't care. I must admit that I have no idea who Eddie Vetters is. 95% of my listening is to Jazz Standards. It's the music I love. It's the music I play. It's the music that moves my soul. I do listen to the classic Rock/Pop stuff from the '60's-'70's which accounts for the last 5% of my listening A friend of mine forced me to listen to Megan Trainor's "All About That Bass". I LMAO. Cute and funny as hell! A very enjoyable novelty tune. But, I returned to Jazz listening immediately thereafter. If you play cool, you are cool.
whitefang Posted December 24, 2014 Posted December 24, 2014 Vetter is/was the lead vocalist for the '90's "grunge" group PEARLJAM. A failrly good vocalist himself. Whitefang I started out with NOTHING...and I still have most of it left!
bbqbob Posted December 26, 2014 Posted December 26, 2014 Real bummer, we are losing so many of the greats nowadays. With Joe Cocker we not only lost a great vocalist but one of the greatest air guitarists of all time.
