nadroj Posted December 22, 2014 Posted December 22, 2014 I dunno how forum games go down here, but it's almost Christmas, and I picked up an idea from another forum that I thought would be interesting. I've adapted it to fit our keyboard theme. The Game: Someone posts a song and another poster explains how he'd cover the keyboard parts in that song in a band setting with one of his current rigs. Details like what sounds you'd replicate/replace, which parts you'd choose to cover if there are multiple parts, how you'd do it (sequenced? Played? Sampled?), etc. It'll be fun (for me at least) to see how different people tackle songs differently. Rules 1) Posts can be as detailed or as vague as you like, but you must post at the bare minimum: -What gear you'd use -Which parts you'd cover Preferably why you chose to do what you did too, but it's not essential. 2) You must only reply using gear you currently have. No "If I had this I'd do this." 3) You must only reply using a rig you'd use live. So you can't use all of the 880 keyboards and 5,000 rack modules you have at home - you have to select a rig you either have used live or would use live. Be realistic - if you mostly play clubs, use a rig appropriate for a club; don't post a stadium rig that wouldn't fit in a venue you'd normally play at. 4) There may be an overlapping of posts, and that's fine. Simply quote the post (or parts of the post) you're choosing to reply to so that we know what you're talking about. 5) If you play in a covers band, think of what your other bandmates would do and decide how you'd approach the song based on that. Would the guitarist normally play one of the keyboard riffs so that you'd be able to play one of the more prominent parts? Mention it! 6) Once you've posted, post a song for another user to tackle. You can pick any song, no matter how bad. If doesn't have to have keyboard parts in it (though preferably it would). 6) No derailing for more than two pages. 7) Have fun(?) I'l get us started with a very brief description. Song: [video:youtube]WpmILPAcRQo For this, I mostly use the FA-06. Pad in the left hand for the intro, while the right hand plays the bell based riff using a combination of various vintage Roland patches. I leave out the twinkly bits because I'm pretty lazy. Nord Electro plays an acoustic piano smothered in a chorus effect for the pre-chorus and mid section. FA plays the string parts throughout the chorus - again, I don't play the twinkly bits throughout, instead playing them as string runs. I leave out the brass parts. Guitarist takes the sax solo. The run at the end of the solo is also played by the guitarist. I currently double it with him on the strings patch I use for the chorus, but have always meant to set up a brass patch for it. I just set it up that way for a rehearsal once and never got around to finishing it. Anyways, that's a song I currently play. It would be more interesting if I were to post in more detail about a song I don't play, but you get the idea. To get the ball rolling and because it's Christmas (almost), I'll get us started with something simple. Anyone has free reign to take this and get started: [video:youtube]E8gmARGvPlI Hammond SKX Mainstage 3
area51recording Posted December 22, 2014 Posted December 22, 2014 I think I'd just quit the band....;-)
Adan Posted December 22, 2014 Posted December 22, 2014 I think you're on to something, Nadroj, but as described this sounds more like work than a game. I've enjoyed reading the reharm discussions that occasionally pop up here. Maybe a game based on how would you change this or that song to make it more interesting? Threadslayer Posted December 22, 2014 Posted December 22, 2014 I just set it up that way for a rehearsal once and never got around to finishing it. Wow. That should probably be my sig. or motto or epitaph. All kidding aside, what a great idea for a game! Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect. -Mark Twain
marino Posted December 22, 2014 Posted December 22, 2014 Hi Nadroj, your proposed game is lovely, but I think you haven't realized the kind of anarcoid egomaniacs who hang here... probably, most of them haven't even finished to read the rules.
marino Posted December 22, 2014 Posted December 22, 2014 Btw, here's my answer: I'd treat the song as a late baroque fugato. (Fugato is 'kind of' like a fugue, but less strict) I'd play the main melody and its variations, on a double reed-like sound on my MEK with my right hand, playing the main harmony with my left hand on a controller keyboard driving my Kurzweil K2600R with a string/pad sound. Then, I would assign two more contrapuntal lines to guitar and bass.
SpPiano Posted December 22, 2014 Posted December 22, 2014 For 'Last Christmas'... Just did this the other night at a Christmas show. PX-5S and Novation Mk 61 with a mainstage hookup. Casio is controlling a patch I made in diva for the main comp with expression pedal controlling cutoff, novation is controlling a patch I made in Zebra 2 for the bell sounds. Guitarist was handed the sleigh bells. Drummer is playing roland spd-sx for e drum sounds. Sounded great!

EscapeRocks Posted December 22, 2014 Posted December 22, 2014 For Cars by Gary Numan: I actually have set this up on my stage rig. FA-08 and MOX6. The MOX6 is split in a Performance. Low intro LFO left hand. riff right hand. FA-08 I use the aux out thru an old MXR Phase 100 for the ending phase shifted part. Next song: Depeche Mode "I Just Can't Get Enough" David Gig Rig:Yamaha CK88 | Arturia Keylab 61mk2 | Mainstage
