Polkahero Posted December 19, 2014 Posted December 19, 2014 I just purchased the sheet music for Vince Guaraldi's version of "What Child Is This?", pretty much got it down already. I'm thinking of playing this for church next week, probably during communion or during the offertory. Pretty conventional service with standard hymns, Episcopalian. Do you guys think this tune would be "too over the top" for a church service? Thanks! Joe P Posted December 19, 2014 Posted December 19, 2014 Great music. I think it would be okay for the Offertory but not for Communion. Good luck! Joe
Bobadohshe Posted December 19, 2014 Posted December 19, 2014 Great music. I think it would be okay for the Offertory but not for Communion. Agreed. MoodyBluesKeys Posted December 19, 2014 Posted December 19, 2014 It would fit well in my church for either. However, mine is not an Episcopal service - a Baptist service in a church with modern music and a band. Beautiful arrangement. Aidan Posted December 19, 2014 Posted December 19, 2014 Great music. I think it would be okay for the Offertory but not for Communion. Agreed. +1 The communion section is the one most of the congregation are most sensitive about. I will occasionally put in a reflective CCM-style song, or a more Celtic/New Age style improvisation, but that's as far as I would push the envelope in my own church (Anglican but fairly informal). But it also depends on context. If all the rest of the music has jazz/gospel influences, you might get away with it. Yamaha: P515, CP88, Genos 1, HX1
rickzjamm Posted December 19, 2014 Posted December 19, 2014 Or start off traditional, improv the middle section while still keeping the flavor of the song intact, then come back out more traditional... that's what I do to much of the music at my parish. Even the "old timers" dig it. You don't know you're in the dark until you're in the light.
Polkahero Posted December 19, 2014 Author Posted December 19, 2014 Thanks for the input, guys. I'm not sure I'll have enough time to play this during the offertory (small congregation), maybe I should use it as one of my Prelude pieces instead? Kevin Keys777 Posted December 20, 2014 Posted December 20, 2014 Lol. This brings back memories. I played this at my church(Lutheran) and the pastor approached me immediately after the service and said "We need to talk about your music selection". We never did have that talk. I think I will play it again this year! Yamaha CP4 (Gigs) Kawai MP7 (home), Yamaha CP33(gigs), Yamaha P80(retired), 3 QSC K10's, Zed 10FX mixer, Sennheiser HD598, Bachendorff 45" acoustic
The Wind Posted December 21, 2014 Posted December 21, 2014 Some churches can be too uptight...do the most jazzy, swingin' version and say the H Spirit struck you and you had a "pentecostal moment! the Big Man upstairs wouldn't mind one bit.
