Happy birthday, Ted Nugent

I thought I'd get this on here a day early, in case I wasn't near my computer Saturday. Ted Nugent, the Motor City Madman, turns 66 years old on Saturday, December 13th. No matter what you think about him personally (and it's hard not to have an opinion about him), you have to admit, Ted sure can play that guitar.

I don't see Ted anymore since he moved down to Texas, but before that, he used to visit and sometimes hang out at the Outdoorama outdoors sports show here in the Detroit area every year. Ted is actually a super nice, friendly, and polite gentleman in person, believe it or not.

I rock; therefore, I am.

Y'know, I find it somewhat disturbing that many guys know who Nugent is, but don't seem to know WHO The Amboy Dukes were!

Regardless of how you feel about his politics, you CAN'T deny his chops!

But, I never DID like that "Motor City Madman" moniker...

But, have a happy, Ted!

Whitefang, that's where I first heard the Nuge, back on Journey To The Center Of The Mind. Still love the MC5, too, even though most of them are gone, now. I also used to read Creem magazine, Detroit's own Rock mag, back in those days, before Lester Bangs became known nationally. Lot of heavy music came out of Detroit and Ann Arbor back then . . . like The Stooges!

Never cared for Ted much. I did like Journey To The Center Of Your Mind tune a bunch. But as soon as Ted started spouting off his opinions as if they are the only valid ones on Earth, I started to dislike him and his philosophies. I just change the channel whenever he is on TV. And I also vote against him for the Board of Directors of the NRA every time.

But that aside Happy Birthday Ted anyways.

Well, as long as everyone else is carefully couching their congrats, I'll join in. The older he gets, the less I care for him, but there is nothing in me but respect for his talent.

It's funny, a few weeks ago, I was driving down Ford Road going towards Telegraph when I drove past Amboy Street. I wondered how many people knew that is where the Amboy Dukes name came from?

As for the "carefully couched" opinions, I'll say this:

Yes, Teddy can play a mean guitar. Was a fan back in my youth, even saw him live a couple times. Solid, even in just a loincloth.

And, yes, the man is a total asshat politically and socially.

Did I mention he can really play guitar? :)

I'm a lot more like I am now than I was when I got here.

My interest took a dive after `Cat Scratch Fever`-not because I didn`t like it, but drowned completely after Damn Yankees-because I didn`t like it. But he did have some good things going back in the day, still like `Stranglehold` and `Journey to the Center...` as mentioned.

Anyway happy birthday Ted-talk less, play more.

Same old surprises, brand new cliches-

My frontman used to tour with Ted. He fronted a band called Madman that opened for Ted - guitar player for Madman was Paul Chapman, later played with UFO.

Anyway I am a fan of Ted's - without any "carefully couched" opinion.

Happy Birthday Ted!!!

A quick Wikicheck informs the name actually comes from the title of a novel by writer Irving Shulman.

Wiki also has Ted being born in Detroit, and another area of Wiki claims it's REDFORD, which was once believed to be a section of West Detroit, but actually is a western suburb of Detroit.

Wiki also claims the first "edition" of The Amboy Dukes premiered in Arlington Heights, Illinois, just outside of Chicago, which was where Nugent was living at the time. His family supposedly moved to Chicago when ted was a teen, and that is where he supposedly formed the original Dukes. Which means Amboy street in Dearborn Heights, MI had nothing to do with it. But I do remember HEARING that story a lot over the years. Which means( Sharkman might get this...) we're lucky it isn't true because it might mean there was a chance the band COULD have been called "The SILVERY LANE Dukes"!

ROTFLMAO!!! Yes, Whitefang, I do indeed get it. That's hilarious. I had heard for years that the Amboy Dukes got their name from Amboy Street in Redford, so I assumed it was true. I'm still cracking up over The Silvery Lane Dukes.

An odd connection to that---We in the downriver area were also aware of that "Urban legend( or, in THIS case, "Suburban legend") of the band taking it's name from a street somewhere around the Detroit area. This caused our band's itinerate bass player to quip. "Maybe WE should name ourselves the "LONDON LORDS" because the house we practiced at was on LONDON street!

Happy B-day to 'Uncle Ted'

As far as 'carefully couched' opinions, I don't agree with too many of Ted's opinions, but love him or hate him, at least he's pretty good at practicing what he preaches.

With Ted, you know where he stands, he's unapologetic for his beliefs and opinions, and doesn't give in to bully tactics to force him into capitulation. I respect that about him, and wish more people were like that.

And he has awesome chops to boot...

One thing that does annoy me, especially around here, deer season is like a national holiday- and if I had a nickel for every time I hear "Fred Bear" get played on EVERY classic rock station... It's like the Jingle Bells of November. I like the song, but so glad when they quit playing it after hunting season.

Ted and other hunters I know could be a part of that "debate" in the comic strip "Pearls Before Swine" over which people are the most annoying at thinking they're superior to everyone else----

cyclists, or VEGANS?

Talking about this with some friends of mine, we decided to lump HOME SCHOOLERS into that discussion. And, based solely on the ones I know, HUNTERS as well!
