Theo Verelst Posted December 11, 2014 Posted December 11, 2014 Aren't they just the greatest ? The imagination of some people is just staggering ! Where do they find these guys.
WillNeverPost Posted December 12, 2014 Posted December 12, 2014 What, they don't have people with imagination on the planet where you're from? I can't myself claim any great imagination but I do agree with you. Some of the handles here are simply brilliant!
Joe Muscara Posted December 12, 2014 Posted December 12, 2014 Funny, as someone started a thread in the FB KC group while it was down where people revealed their real names. I had no idea about many of them. https://www.facebook.com/groups/63372736302/permalink/10152931286021303/ "I'm so crazy, I don't know this is impossible! I don't access FB but I'm sure I would find it fascinating. Any chance Sven revealed his real name?
RABid Posted December 12, 2014 Posted December 12, 2014 There have been a couple of interesting threads over the years about how people chose their screen names. This post edited for speling. My Sweetwater Gear Exchange Page

J. Dan Posted December 13, 2014 Posted December 13, 2014 Challenge: I've changed my name on here a few times for reasons related to the bands I've been, and not been in. Those of you who are my FB friends likely know my real name, plus I've shared it on here before. The first person to correctly name my 2 other online names besides current, and my real name, I'll buy a Chimay - your choice of red or blue. Extra points if you can explain the reason for the changes. Extra extra points if you include changes in my avatar! Not sure about the burning hair thing.. maybe you're a big Michael Jackson fan? It was because in the That 80s Band he was in, he wore a wig. When 80s-LZ left that band, he "burned" the wig in the avatar. By the way, LZ is sort of his last name. "I'm so crazy, I don't know this is impossible! Theo Verelst Posted December 14, 2014 Author Posted December 14, 2014 I suppose it isn't all cool if people play private FBI using the internet, so probably screen names protect us from traitors, thieves, and all kinds of possibly unhealthy interest. OTOH, a town hall meeting with the kind of names that sometimes pop up as aliases would be a tad to funny, and take away some of the value of communication. T.
Dr88s Posted December 14, 2014 Posted December 14, 2014 I suppose it isn't all cool if people play private FBI using the internet, so probably screen names protect us from traitors, thieves, and all kinds of possibly unhealthy interest. +100. I for one am very concerned about privacy in the digital age. It isn't hard to imagine some company writing a data minor akin to Google's robots which not only crawl the Internet and store information, but cross-reference facts and dates to construct a very detailed profile about a person, especially if he or she has an uncommon name. I am not so much concerned about being served targeted ads. That doesn't bother me at all. I am really worried about other nefarious uses that I can't even conceive of until somebody else exploits them. In the very early days of the Internet, I had posted some silly questions/comments to a USENET newsgroup. These things have all been archived and now come up as Google hits under my name. Someone else now owns my comments, no matter how old or irrelevant they may be. More recently, I sold something on a local classified site. I made the mistake of using my real email address with my real name. A very eager buyer managed to find my primary place of work, and social engineered his way into getting my private number at a much harder to reach secondary place of work. Creepy. Since then, I have learned to only use pseudonyms or screen names. Nord Stage 2 Compact, Yamaha MODX8

I declined to play earlier, because by the time the beverage made its way up from St. Louis to Toronto, it may have lost some of the quality... but I'll definitely keep it on tab, for the day when (hopefully) we actually meet up IRL, Dan.
