xKnuckles Posted December 7, 2014 Posted December 7, 2014 Hello. I put a video on YouTube a couple of weeks ago, and I now see that if I try to play it in YouTube in Safari on my iPad I get this message: "Sorry, this video is not available on this device". It still plays in the YouTube app on my iPad, and also on my windows computer. It contains "acknowledged third party content" (it is a cover not an original). Does anybody know what I can do to make it allowed by mobile devices? I don't understand why it does not work everywhere. Thank you. "Turn your fingers into a dust rag and keep them keys clean!" xKnuckles Posted December 7, 2014 Author Posted December 7, 2014 Thank you Sven. I did actually have a look at Google before posting this question, but as usual, the combination of partial information, combined with misinformation & irrelevant information made my head hurt. I guess I was just hoping that maybe someone else on the forum might have been in this situation and perhaps have experience of taking whatever (proper & legal) option is available to make the video allowed on mobiles. (The Google advice which I came across seemed to mostly involve telling lies...... ) If there are no options, then it is good to know that also. DulceLabs.com Posted December 7, 2014 Posted December 7, 2014 You'll have to excuse Sven, Anne. He's a little cranky as it's his busy time of year.. he's busing making plans to raid Whoville in a few weeks... http://forumsmile.ru/u/f/c/d/fcdacc1f51ed379e94e34fd5f561c5b8.gif Anywho - is your YouTube account or video monetized? You would have had to set that up so you should know if it is. Also - Is this third-party owned music? If it is. the content owner can set the platform it can be viewed on. Links to the video and more info will help solve the case!
xKnuckles Posted December 8, 2014 Author Posted December 8, 2014 LOL!! Cheers Scott. My YouTube account is not monetised. Yes it is third party owned music. Most of the other videos of this song are also not available on mobiles....but some are.... Which makes me wonder if there is a way of altering the current setup... Sven Golly Posted December 8, 2014 Posted December 8, 2014 Seriously? One of the first few links in the search I posted above is to the YouTube page explaining this. You can choose to make your videos available on all platforms or monetized platforms only. The distribution setting will be found in the video's Metadata Editor. To access the Editor, go to your Video Manager, find the video that needs new settings, and click the Edit button. Here are a few additional notes regarding distribution: Users who are not monetizing partners cannot change the distribution setting in the Advanced Settings tab of Video Manager. If a user's video is a claimed video, the distribution setting of the claimant, not the user, will apply. If a user's video is a video with a claim to the music contained within that video, the distribution setting of the claimant, not the user, will apply to the video. * emphasis mine. Not sure how this could be any clearer, frankly.
xKnuckles Posted December 8, 2014 Author Posted December 8, 2014 The information seems clear, Sven, but for what I am trying to find out; incomplete. As I mentioned above, there are many covers of this piece of music to be found on YouTube, and quite a few of them ARE available on mobiles. The link does not explain why this is so, or what is the difference between the two categories of videos - which is what puzzles me......... It may well be that I am missing something (wouldn't be the first time unfortunately), but that is how it appears to me. I am the first to admit that I am not at all knowledgable about YouTube..... We're flying blind and it's very foggy out there! http://www.jokelibrary.net/images/sc_pe-handicapped.gif.pagespeed.ce._rRnopOU-2.gif Thanks Scott. I appreciate your help. I just looked again and realise that I am using the desktop version of YouTube in Safari on my iPad. Only some of the videos play on that. Mine does not. But, when I swap to the mobile version, they all play. I compared my one to a couple of the other ones which do play, but can see no difference to explain why. Here is a link to a few of the other ones which ARE allowed on the desktop. I can see no difference between them, or the stuff surrounding them. It is very odd. Actually - whilst doing it I just noticed something. My link was http://. The other three were ALL https://. I don't know if that means anything, but it makes me wonder if the "S" is somehow signifigant. (Bit weird though, cause I thought the "S" normally meant that the website was secure..... Surely YouTube is always equally secure?.....) Anyways, obviously this is not a big deal. Especially since the videos work in the mobile app, and the mobile Safari version. I am just curious as to why they do not play in the desktop version. (If you have the YouTube app on your iPad/phone, you might find it difficult to to access the desktop version, as it may simply redirect you straight to the app). Thanks again. Joe Muscara Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 Your video played in the desktop version of Safari for me, but that was on my Mac. On my iPad, opening the link took me to the iOS version of YouTube and it worked there as well. I wasn't able to try it directly in Safari on the iPad as those links immediately open in the YouTube app. "I'm so crazy, I don't know this is impossible!
