Griffinator Posted December 1, 2014 Posted December 1, 2014 First off, let me take a moment and rage my love for this particular instrumental. It really highlights the level of sophistication Metallica reached with this album (and would never reach again...) in terms of arrangments. Now, the meat of the matter: During the A-E-C C-E-A phrasing the first time 'round (starting at 2:12 in the video, for those scoring at home), the E/F vamping after the descending phrase takes on a really, really strange rhythm that, for some reason, I can't get my head around it. Anyone here care to give me a rhythmic breakdown of that phrase? Frustratingly, it's one of those critical components that barely lasts long enough to justify the effort you put into it (because on the back end, when they re-enter this ascending/descending pattern, they play it straight the whole time...) Much appreciated in advance! [video:youtube] A bunch of loud, obnoxious music I USED to make with friends.
Lokair Posted December 1, 2014 Posted December 1, 2014 Griff I used to play this on bass with a few bands, its triplet feel and reverse your thinking on the E/F part. Its easier to learn it on bass then convert it to guitar(that section especially) using your fingers on the right hand. I do not have a bass or guitar in hand. But tomorrow night I will sit back down with a bass in hand. thinking it out its E 8th,E 8th,F 16th, E 8th,E 8th,F 16th, e 8th,e 8th, e 16th. Think galloping like Iron Maidenish for just that small section. After the descending portion (C-E-A), where the drum pattern gets sketchy and there seems to be an extra beat or half-beat in the phrase is the part that confuses me... Lokair Posted December 1, 2014 Posted December 1, 2014 Wow, I may have to relearn the song. your right that section is different, Ill have to sit down and play it out. I think i knew it years ago correctly but now it seems foreign, or atleast it doesn't come to mind. I was assuming they were the same at this point in time. I had to learn tons of Metallica to play in a band in the late 80s and early 90s, was never a big fan. I like them but just couldnt get into them like all the other people who played around here. Griffinator Posted December 2, 2014 Author Posted December 2, 2014 Truthfully, this is the only record I ever really LIKED by Metallica. A bunch of loud, obnoxious music I USED to make with friends.
Guitarzan Posted December 2, 2014 Posted December 2, 2014 my first and only Metallica album. back in the day i never really noticed what you are referring to. i would strongly suggest you never listen to any Freak Kitchen because they lay stuff down that is insane. anyway back to the subject, i can hear what is going on there but i would have to listen to it awhile to let it sink in. http://www.soundclick.com/bands/pagemusic.cfm?bandID=193274 rock it, i will
Griffinator Posted December 3, 2014 Author Posted December 3, 2014 my first and only Metallica album. back in the day i never really noticed what you are referring to. i would strongly suggest you never listen to any Freak Kitchen because they lay stuff down that is insane. I love listening to complex rhythms. Sussing them out and replicating them is the nightmare part... anyway back to the subject, i can hear what is going on there but i would have to listen to it awhile to let it sink in. I'd greatly appreciate it if you can get around to it. A bunch of loud, obnoxious music I USED to make with friends.
Lokair Posted December 3, 2014 Posted December 3, 2014 Still no guitar or bass in hand, hopefully tomorrow night, now you got me thinking about it. put the song on my phone and have been listing to it a couple of times a day. Griffinator Posted December 4, 2014 Author Posted December 4, 2014 It's fine. It's not a time-sensitive project. My original band discussed the issue of incorporating covers, and we decided this was the only one we were interested in doing. We'll actually be bringing in an outside drummer for this, because our drummer also plays guitar and has volunteered to serve as the #3 guitar (necessary for a number of parts) for this song. Griffinator Posted December 14, 2014 Author Posted December 14, 2014 Okay, after bashing my own brains out for these last weeks, reading a million different tab versions online (all wrong), and watching a million people on YT play it (mostly wrong), I think I finally have it. In the ascending, you have the straight gallop against the straight beat 000 011 000 When Lars gets all weird with his triplets, here's what I hear happening: 000 011 000 0 So it's just a simple extra half-beat on the back end to "fix" what Lars broke when he lost count of his triplets... It sounds so damned complicated, is the crazy part. A bunch of loud, obnoxious music I USED to make with friends.
