bloodsample Posted November 21, 2014 Posted November 21, 2014 Disclaimer: I'm a synth player so I don't know much about bass guitars. I do play enough guitar and bass to get by though. I want to get this type of sound (bass starts at 0:10): [video:youtube]vNuT5sGUbF8 What should I be looking at? Any particular bass guitars? Amps? Recording techniques? I want to buy a bass but I also want to understand what else is involved in getting this sound. I'd like to stay under 500$USD if possible. Vintage/used is fine. Any brands I should look at or avoid? Thanks! YouTube: onceuponasynth.tv

jeremy c Posted November 22, 2014 Posted November 22, 2014 jazz bass. really old strings. string mutes. a pick. slightly cut the hi and low EQ. That'd work. Free download of my cd!.
Basshappi Posted November 22, 2014 Posted November 22, 2014 Pretty good bet that it's a Precision with flats, palm muted while played with a pick. Don't worry about an amp as it was most likely recorded direct. If you're going to play it live just about any amp of sufficent power would do, settings as Rumplestiltskin suggested. Don't be afraid to get a bit of dirt in the tone, you want old school not hi-fi. Nothing is as it seems but everything is exactly what it is - B. Banzai Life is what happens while you are busy playing in bands.
Imogene Posted November 22, 2014 Posted November 22, 2014 Pretty much agree with everything that's been said so far, except THAT is a Pbass, no doubt.
Nicklab Posted November 22, 2014 Posted November 22, 2014 jazz bass. really old strings. string mutes. a pick. slightly cut the hi and low EQ. Maybe. That tone from a Jazz says to me: Flatwound strings, the bridge pickup rolled off, and the tone set about halfway. Add the string mutes or foam at the bridge and a pick. As for getting that tone on a modern instrument? The Fender Classic 60's Jazz bass will probably get you in the neighborhood. New those go for around $750 - $800. You can probably get one used for around $600. The Fender standard Jazz bass goes for $600 new. But the appointments and craftsmanship might be a little bit beneath the level of the Classic Series.
