Piktor Posted November 18, 2014 Posted November 18, 2014 Wondering if by some chance anyone here has had experience with the K&M 18815 laptop holder. I am using the K&M 18810 stand for a Hammond SK2 (love that stand!). While I have the 18813 keyboard stacker components for adding an additional keyboard controller to the stand, sometimes I only bring the SK2 to gigs. With that configuration I would like to have the option of triggering an additional midi module from the organ. As the SK2 doesn't have much in the way of midi controllers, with the Hammond I have used an old Yamaha mcs2 for its mod and pitch wheels, foot controller inputs, breath controller, etc. for real time control of external synths. What I want to know is if the 18815 can be positioned in such way that I would be able to reach out and have easy (and reasonably ergonomic) access to a midi controller such as the msc2 with my left hand. Thanks
Bobadohshe Posted November 18, 2014 Posted November 18, 2014 My question is WHY IS IT SO DAMN EXPENSIVE. Piktor Posted November 18, 2014 Author Posted November 18, 2014 Ya, I know. I can't tell you why K&M stuff is so expensive, but I can tell you why I was willing to pay the cost. Before I picked that stand, I saw Jim Alfredson's setup and loved the look and I figured that I've made enough compromises in all the years that I've been doing this. It is a great stand - sturdy, relatively small footprint, easy to set up.
Six-string-man Posted November 18, 2014 Posted November 18, 2014 It's so expensive because it's well engineered, well built, and they stock every single individual part, so that if you do lose/break something, you only have to buy that one piece, and not scrap the whole stand. AnalogGuy1 Posted November 18, 2014 Posted November 18, 2014 Another option: take a piece 3/8" plywood cut to the size of your keyboard width + laptop width. Spray with adhesive, cover in black speaker cabinet carpet (klonk) and you have a stable shelf.
Bobadohshe Posted November 18, 2014 Posted November 18, 2014 I actually really want one too. If I get the K&M Omega stand I'll be getting this as well, despite the cost, because it's so clean, functional and probably works great. It's just insane that the Omega stand + second tier + laptop attachment would be over $500. We all know that things are generally about 30% more expensive in the UK compared with the US. I have just looked up the prices. I can import those three items from Germany for £200, including postage. That equates to $300. I know shipping is not cheap, but someone is getting ripped off here. Maybe import taxes? If you want to send me the cash + shipping costs, I will buy them for you, and post them to the US, and you can sort out the taxes at your end. Feel free to PM me. Six-string-man Posted November 18, 2014 Posted November 18, 2014 I have just re-read this, and realise that it looks very much like an internet scam, "just send me your bank details, and I will pay you $1,000,000 for the use of your account". It is a genuine offer - honest! SSM Occasionally, do something nice for a total stranger. They'll wonder what the hell is going on!
jimkost2002 Posted November 19, 2014 Posted November 19, 2014 I have used the K&M laptop tray with my Omega. Great piece and squarely in the K&M rock solid build tradition. But it is a bit awkward to set up and tear down as I've got to be able to be on and off stages quickly. But if you are using it at home or in rehearsal or can afford a more leisurely set up and break down of your rig, go for it-it is worth every penny. Piktor Posted November 23, 2014 Author Posted November 23, 2014 Thanks for the suggests, feedback and review. After looking at the range of prices for the K&M laptop hold, I can see that adding the 18815 would easily take the stand, 2nd tier & laptop holder rig over $500.00. Originally, I bought a mixer/keyboard stand (https://www.long-mcquade.com/4799/Keyboards/Accessories/Yorkville_Sound/Mixer_Keyboard_Stand.htm) for considerably less to hold the Yamaha mcs2. However, I have found that stand (with an added piece of board) to be really useful for a number of other things (monitor stand, stand for mixer/Ventilator, etc.). I have found several lower cost stand-alone laptop stands for less money than the K&M 18815. Money aside, of greatest concern to me is the ergonomic placement of the stand, as I would be reaching for it with my left arm a lot if I use it to hold a Yamaha mcs2, or other midi controller. I'm already having enough problems with inflammation, tendons, etc. (been working on report cards comments for about 13 hours so far today. When I get some time, I'll set up the Omega/SK2 combo, look at measurements from the various options , take out a tape measure and see what I can figure out.
Matthiola Posted November 23, 2014 Posted November 23, 2014 I have the 18815. Can't really recommend it, the plate itself is relatively thin sheet metal and the whole construction wobbles like crazy. I have a lot of K&M stuff and most of it is 1st class, just not this one. And it is indeed way to expensive for what it is. You could place your laptop on the second tier as these can be spaced very close. It's even better to use a separate laptop stand. Also I think the 18810 is not ideal for live due to the many loose parts. Once 'folded', it still is a large chunk of metal. I think this stand is great for the studio (I have 2 of them with the 2nd tier).
