JeffLearman Posted November 18, 2014 Posted November 18, 2014 On CP4, I want to control Rhodes stereo vibrato using the mod wheel, but it doesn't work. According to the manual, you can use the mod wheel to set the "amount" of either affect A or B, though it doesn't say which parameter gets controlled (it could be dry/wet ratio, which would be fine.) Following the CP4 manual's instructions (or instructions here) don't work. It has zero impact. The mod wheel continues to do vibrato. Any clues?
Bobadohshe Posted November 18, 2014 Posted November 18, 2014 Not sure about your particular plight but there is a video on Yamahsynth that I intend on watching in the next couple days about programming performances in the CP4. It might shed some light. JeffLearman Posted November 18, 2014 Author Posted November 18, 2014 Well, I'm pretty sure there just isn't any way. As it turns out, there are a number of insert effects that do stereo vibrato: all the Rhodes preamps and two other insert effects. The preamps don't respond to mod wheel in any way that I can find, and the two insert effects only allow the mod wheel to control rate, not depth. (Yet the rate is too touchy to be very useful live. By 20% it's way up into the too fast for useful purposes range.) Another odd bit is that some effects disable mod wheel pitch modulation when you assign it to the effect; others don't. However, there's another place to disable it, so that's fine. Too bad we only have 5 choices for what mod wheel does (default, effect a positive, effect a negative, effect b positive, and effect b negative). I guess if I wanted more control I should have bought a MOXF. ;-) At least I get an on/off control. I can always set up a couple performances with different depths. In the past, though, I've found it useful to be able to adjust it to taste on the fly.
JB Sherry Posted November 18, 2014 Posted November 18, 2014 Lear, take a look at the Cp4 Data List . It appears that there is at most a single parameter that can be mapped to a controller per insert effect. So for the Tremolo & Rotary effect, that is LFO speed. Looks like the various Rhodes preamp inserts that have vibrato don't have ANY parameters that are controllable. You could try the auto-pan option in the Tremolo & Rotary insert. hopefully it will do more than fast and slow.
JeffLearman Posted November 18, 2014 Author Posted November 18, 2014 You're right, Jon -- thanks. Though, it's still a bit misleading. The dot in the "Ctrl" column shows which parameter an expression pedal would control (you can connect up to two of them on CP4). Mod Wheel is CC#1, so I assume that whatever appears as CC#1, that's what the mod wheel should control. In many cases, it's the same as the dot, but in cases where it's different, MW controls CC#1, not the parameter with the dot. Regardless, thanks for pointing that out. I did look at the data sheet, but hadn't quite made the connection to CC#1 (doh!) ... the misleading part: some FX have CC#1 but the mod wheel doesn't control them. For example, bass on the preamps.
ITGITC Posted November 19, 2014 Posted November 19, 2014 Err... I must have dozed off. Learjeff... When did you procure a C4? Do ya like it? "Music expresses that which cannot be put into words and that which cannot remain silent." - Victor Hugo
JeffLearman Posted November 19, 2014 Author Posted November 19, 2014 Two weeks ago. Yeah, I like it! Nothing's perfect, and maybe I'll wish I'd got the MOXF instead, but at least I'll spend a 10th of the time (or less) fiddling with it since it's not particularly complex. The action is the best, the pianos are very good, I like the epianos, and the strings and pads that I'll use are nice. The organ is a poor excuse. I'd hoped it'd be good enough to use by itself for rehearsals, but its organ is worse than the NE2's piano. I've never understood why no ROMpler I've tried (other than PX5S) doesn't include the basic rock/blues 88800000 tone. No, they gotta sample all these other strange Hammond registrations, with percussion (BLECCH when it retriggers with each keypress!) BTW, I got a chance to fiddle with a PC3K8 the other day. Nice bit of kit, though I don't care at all for the Leslie sim, which kinda takes the fun out of the organ. But it was running through a KC amp in mono, so I'll have to try again with a decent monitor. I liked the piano (after mentally compensating for the KC amp.) Lemme know if you want to give it a try sometime!
