cool new effects

That Brian May Special reference reminds me of that pickup switching system I'm still thinking of installing in my FrankenTele - that one with the 68 possible coil combinations or whatever. That plus this stompbox would be insanity squared! :D

Much as I like infinite options, I pretty much now just find my one favorite pickup combination on each guitar & leave it there, making tone changes with the tone pot. 68 possible coil combos is cool, but I know I'd just find the one that I like best & stick with that. Invariably it is all pickups on, for me.

+1 I like to find the sweet spot on each guitar and then just play it from there. I call it playing an electric like an acoustic and/or an acoustic electric...I will admit to flipping a switch or changing a setting now and then though.

ps. I do the same thing with effects pedals and even amps (i.e. find that sweet spot I love best) although I do kick the pedals in and out, I rarely change the amp settings...

Take care, Larryz

68! that would drive me bonkers. i need to keep my pick in my right hand and my fingers on the neck. if i had 68 choices i wouldn't get very far playing. as long as i have a nice clean sound and a nice bucker in the bridge i am happy. heck i don't even use a tone control.

This is a flanger, but it seems to be a pretty nice one:

I love how he starts right off with The Cure's Primary, which was one of the great Flanger workouts of the 80's.

Perfect for early Cult, too.

Funny thing about that; Robert Smith and Billy Duffy both use stock Boss pedals. I know Smith got the Primary sound from a Boss BF-2 Flanger.

Oh, I don't doubt that for a second. I mean, if you look at most pro boards over the past 50 years, you're going to see a lot of big name brand pedals and only a very small number of small-company or "BOO-TEEK" pedals. Even younger big name guitarists you'd suspect of favoring exotic stuff only will sometimes surprise you when they reveal an old, beat up Boss pedal or some such as a key to their distinctive sound.

The reasons are many: availability, familiarity, functionality, reliability, etc. Who made 'em don't much matter as long as the doggone things get the job done, right?

Exactly that. Billy Duffy says he doesn't need to be hunting down some oddball box when he's on tour. If something breaks down, he can walk into nearly any music store anywhere, and find a replacement.

Bruce Lee might describe those as "having no wah as wah, no motion as motion".
