How's your temperament?

I just read an excellent article at The New Republic Online about the history of western tuning systems, and I thought I would share it with you all. http://www.thenewrepublic.com/121001/franklin121001.html It's ostensibly a book review, but it's really much more than that, and well worth a read.

Interesting artical. But perhaps this explains why when I tune a guitar to a piano or to an electronic tuner, the harmonics beat and require fine adjustment by ear? Or do I just have an out of tune piano and a cheap tuner?
