Ran across this video when looking for some info on the Fairlight CMI. I know PSB aren't eveyone's cup of tea, but there is a lot of top-of-line vintage digital gear on that stage.. easy to ID thanks to the HUGE labels. :)

- Fairlight CMI

- Yamaha DX-1

- Technics PX-1

- Emu Emulator 2

The Fairlight's Page R sequencer can be seen in the monitor bank.. Only thing I can't ID is the synth Neil Tennant plays at 2:40 for the bell sounds. Sounds like a DX-7 but doesn't look like one... Can't make out a label or the panel.

Looks like a DX-7 to me.

It's a DX-1

Sorry Mate - I see the DX-1. I'm talking about the smaller one the lead singer plays. It's very hard to make out. No label on the back and kind of a blurred, wide angle view of the front panel.

I am thinking it is a DX-7 from the sound and the parts I can see. No biggie either way - It is those big flagship pieces of gear that caught my eye. :)

Man, the DX-1 is a gorgeous looking synth. Brazilian rosewood case! And almost $11K in 1984 dollars, and almost $14K the next (and last) year. Only 140 made!

Even though I was living in SoCal and shopping in LA at all the biggest stores, I don't think I've ever seen one in the flesh. My god that was a lot of money in the day, and now for that matter.

There's a guy on eBay that refurbs DX5's in African Zebrawood to look like this. He also redoes the panel to be glossy. Beautiful work:

I had a DX5 for a short time, and can't see the practicality of ever having another one, but man, this one is pretty.

It does look great, but FM synthesis for 11-14K? Wow, how things have changed.

It does seem crazy when you think you can get oodles more power from an iPhone! :) There is something very seductive about those huge old boards though...
