MIDI questions for fellow Fantom-X owners

For the first time in many years, I'm thinking of using MIDI in my live rig, to take advantage of the master controller capabilities of my recently acquired Yamaha MOXF8. Fellow Fantom-X owners, with the Fantom in Performance mode, you can call up different performances with MIDI Program change messages, right? I don't really see this referred to in the manual (so far), only it talking about setting the parts in performances to individually receive program changes or not, but I want to use them to change the selected performance, calling another one. Do you guys know for sure if this can be done, and if so how, what needs to be done to set it up? I went into the System menu, MIDI sub-menu, there I have "Receive/Remote Program Change" and "Receive/Remote Bank Select" checked, set "Kbd Patch Rx/Tx channel" set to 15 arbitrarily, then on the Master set up I am trying to create on my MOXF8 (really helpful if anybody else knows both instruments), I have Zone 1 set to Channel 15, Ext Sw set to on (so it should send MIDI), and yet when I select that Master, nothing seems to happen on my Fantom, it doesn't change performances (or if as an experiment, I change it to Patch mode, it doesn't change patches either.) Anybody know what else I'm missing? thanks.

I'm writing this just from memory, but I think there was the notion of a "performance control" MIDI channel that can be set, and by sending program change messages to that MIDI channel you can change performances.

Yes that seems right. On the Fantom G there is a Control Channel you can allocate for Studio Sets and Live sets so it would be similar for the Fantom X. most Roland instruments have this.

Thanks Bob, you're right, that is another setting on the MIDI menu and I didn't know what it meant (and referring again to the manual I see you're exactly right). It's still not working for me unfortunately, even though I have the performance control set to the same channel that's (supposed to be anyway) sending the program change message. I know my MIDI connectivity is working because I can receive midi performance data on that same channel by playing the other keyboard, but no matter what I do I still can't seem to get it to change the performance. Maybe I have to send a bank select first or something? Wouldn't think so. Thanks again, anybody else think of anything?

Never mind, it's working now! YES! That satisfying feeling when you work for hours on a problem and finally get it figured out and working!

Really? I find the screen-based editing system on my Fantom X (maybe not the same as the XR you referred to, not familiar with that) very quick and easy to work in. One thing I don't like is that (as far as I have been able to discover, somebody please let me know if I'm mistaken!), in Performances, you can't set a velocity range per part. Guess every system has its shortcomings; on my MOXF8 and other workstations I've used, you can do that, BUT, what (again unless I'm missing it) it seems you can't do, and is a really nice feature on the Fantom that I use all the time, is adjust the amplitude envelope ADSR, for a part within the performance, independent of the Patch itself that is used for that part; that is tremendously useful and I really miss it on the MOXF.

Yea..It had a small screen. Wouldn't have been an issue if I plugged into pc. I was in between homes at the time so I had only the screen on the unit to work with. Had some expansions for it too. It was the best sounding unit I ever played! Man the synth in that thing was a beast! Not to mention how killer the acoustic instruments sounded. There was a used one on kc here for sale for $700! Man I wanted to drop the hammer but cabbage was a little thin then. Would make a great studio piece! I had to sell mine when I got sick to pay doctors. One of these days I'll get another. Maybe even the full board model like you have.
