richforman
So I have been thinking about buying a Yamaha MOFX8, and the email I got today saying that Sam Ash is offering a promotion of $250 off any purchase of $1299 or more until this Saturday, is lighting a fire under my ass and I'm thinking of marching into the store tonight or tomorrow and making it so. My question is, when buying new gear from Sam Ash, in your guys' experience is there any room for haggling? Of course the price sticker shows $1699, same price as any other retailer selling them new, but if I tell them I'm serious about making a purchase and ask them if they'll deal at all, come up with an even slightly lower number (before brandishing my 250-off coupon obviously!), will they ever bite? Or are the sales prices in the store firm? mate stubb
It costs you nothing to offer a lower price. I wouldn't ask them if they will haggle, just say "I would pay $XXXX right now." clavjav
I doubt they'll offer you a lower price, and then still honour the coupon. Maybe check the T's & C's of the coupon? Either way, these things always have an aspect of manager's discretion. But you're effectively already getting a 15% discount, which is pretty good for the MI trade Haggling does work though, I find it best to try and add on extras such as pedal, stand etc for free. Retailers usually have a higher mark up on these items so can easily give them away with large purchases. Also sometimes, manufacturers put price restrictions on certain product lines, which means no retailer could give you less than a certain price, even if they wanted to. Brettymike
They certainly wont kill you for offering a lower price , offer them CASH on the spot. Brett
Sven Golly
Bear in mind you're attempting to purchase the latest and greatest board, that is in pretty high demand, not a closeout obsolete piece of gear. Also, "CASH" can be more costly/less convenient than credit or debit (do you guys have debit down there yet? ), as they have to pay someone in the office to count it, then send it to the bank, and deposit it. There's no getting around sales tax (at least not at a reputable dealer)... this is no flea market transaction. As clavjav mentioned, they're not likely to discount then give you the promo coupon. You want a deal? Wait until it's not a hot item, or buy something older. Otherwise, help keep your local dealer in business and buy local.
Brettymike
Sven , I would flash $100 dollar notes , and still try my rotten luck . Cash is king here in NZ. Brett

Mark Zeger
Be nice when asking, though this may seem obvious. A little bit of nice goes a long way. Ask if there is an open box or scratched one, or if the demo unit is available for a little less. If not, just buy it and enjoy it.
AnotherScott
Sven , I would flash $100 dollar notes , and still try my rotten luck . Cash is king here in NZ. Even in the U.S., places will sometimes be more quick to deal with cash, because the credit card companies take a percentage off the top (and also, the money is not instantly available). A small local shop where you can talk to the owner will sometimes provide more flexibility, as opposed to a chain where the manager probably doesn't see the benefit-from-cash as hitting his pocket personally. Maybe this is the best place for a shameless plug! Our now not-so-new new video at https://youtu.be/3ZRC3b4p4EI is a 40 minute adaptation of T. S. Eliot's "Prufrock" - check it out! And hopefully I'll have something new here this year. ;-)

Unless you know someone, you're probably not going to get any better than this.
richforman
The consensus was right, they didn't go any lower or offer any extra goodies but I went for it anyway, a great deal as Dave points out - between the $250 off promotion from the store, and the great promotion from Yamaha for including (from their website) "a FL512MB Flash Board, 2 VST instruments and over 3.9 GB of incredible sample content for use in your MOXF including Chick Corea's Mark V EP, the acoustic piano from the Yamaha CP1 and some great new sounds from Twisted Tools and SoundWaves"....hard to resist! (I submitted the claim for this to Yamaha already, you enter your serial # and upload a photo of your sales receipt from the store and you're good to go.) Then unbeknownst to me til I got home and opened it up, the purchase also came with free downloads of Cubase AI which I guess is a light version of Cubase; Yamaha's editing software for the instrument; Steinberg Prologue which I don't even know what it is!; and some kind of Yamaha Organ Emulator app too. I'm pretty happy with the deal! And my back will appreciate it when this replaces my venerable S80 as the bottom/piano tier in my gigging rig, at about 20 lbs. lighter. Oh yeah and I remember from a couple threads here some of you guys mentioning a separate patch editingg app for the MOX line? that you said was really good, will look it up in the other threads and check it out. MikeT156
Rich It sounds like they cut you a good deal. Maybe they didn't pay a whole lot of the extras, but if they have a bundle at a great price and you can make use of all the extra goodies, take the deal! Mike T. Shamanczarek
If you don't want to haggle wait for Sam Ash or Guitar Center to issue one of their 15% off sale coupons. Either store will usually price match the other. If you do want to haggle you know they can go at least 15% lower.
