mak1457
My question about it is this - how effective would this sub be for using with a Hammond SK (XK) at a live performance. Or do I need to consider something else. It's a 150W amp with a frequency range of 22Hz - 160Hz and a 8" cone woofer. At this point, I know little about live performances and the equipment you need. I'm willing to spend $800 - $900. Hammond XK1-c, Hammond XPK-100, Yamaha FC-7, Spacestation V3
Bif_
Don't do it. Big mistake. Studio gear isn't made to travel and will likely get damaged easily and fast. It's also not big enough to do the job. HammondDave mentioned a Carvin sub for around $500 (search at carvin.com) What size venue are you talking about? mak1457
Probably about 80 x 30 ft room at the largest. Appreciate the advice. I liked the idea of a studio monitor system because it gave me two speakers at different locations. It being a Hammond XK1c I'm looking for something that makes the Leslie stand out the most. I'm still about four months away from getting everything so I have some time yet. I'm just trying to educate myself as to what the best for me would be given my budget's super limited but I'm dying for that Hammond sound. Yamaha IMO has always built speaker cabinets well and the DX series seem to be in keeping with that tradition. Nobody told me there'd be days like these... mak1457
Forgive my ignorance but would a Yamaha DXS15 be all I need for the XK1c or do I need speakers too? Another $300 for even the smallest speakers is really pushing it. I should say my annual income is about $11,000 so some might see this as a joke but I really want a Hammond. I definitely don't want to skimp on the sound source. Hammond XK1-c, Hammond XPK-100, Yamaha FC-7, Spacestation V3
mak1457
Or could I get by with a DXR 15 only or do I need to couple it with the DXS? And do I have to have DXRs to achieve stereo (which I assume I want for a good Leslie effect). Do you already have a mixer and two speakers? 2) Are you playing by yourself or with other musicians? What other instruments in your band? 3) Are you playing bass on the organ? I'm not sure you need a subwoofer. It sounds like you don't have any speakers or maybe even a mixer, so you might have some more immediate needs. opdigits
Typically, you would utilize a sub to enhance an existing PA/monitor setup, wherein you wanted more bottom. You would use a crossover to split the frequency so that the mids and highs go to the top end speaker cabinet and the low end goes to the sub. So, in essence, no, the Yamaha DXS15 would not be a good choice as the sole PA for your keys. Typically, and just using the Yamaha DX series as an example, one would pole mount a Yamaha DXR12 (or one of the other DX series cabs) on top of the Yamaha DXS15, so as to get the full range of the frequency spectrum. If you are using this as your keys monitor system, and, there is a FOH PA you utilize as well, you may not need a sub at all. The answers to Bif's questions above will help us help you. mak1457
This is what I'm doing. I don't have anything currently but I am getting an XK-1c in the near future. I know what I want organ-wise but I have very little idea of what I should use for a sound source on a $800-900 budget. A lot of my playing will be done in my 11x12 bedroom but I do plan to take the board to a small venue or two (that by the way doesn't have a PA available) alongside a piano. Since I'm a huge proponent of "kicking bass", I do need that low end. So I need something that 1) brings out the best bass reproduction 2) A sound source that makes it feel that the organ is coming at you from all sides 3) enough sound to fill smallish rooms (80 x 30 at the largest) I still have a few months before I have the funds to make this happen. I just don't want to have unrealistic expectations with the kind of budget I have. - Michael Hammond XK1-c, Hammond XPK-100, Yamaha FC-7, Spacestation V3
Jim Alfredson
Where are you located? Dave is selling two 2121 speakers. One of these plus the 2101mkII would be a great rig with plenty of bass. https://forums.musicplayer.com/ubbthreads.php/topics/2544427/FS_Pair_of_Leslie_2121_Cabinet#Post2544427 Keep it greazy! Bif_
I would look at something like the Electro-Voice ZLX-12P Powered Loudspeaker. $400 each, you can run your keyboard directly into them (no mixer needed), they should get quite loud, go down to 50 HZ (pretty good low end) and only weigh 35# each. There are other choices (Behringer, Mackie Thump, etc.), that will have different specs and prices.
