skipclone 1
I was almost going to title this as, I have had it with musical collaborations. Some of the forum folks already know, that usually I do everything on my demos except play drums. But I have had guest artists-not on guitar so far but various instruments. On exactly three occasions I have had guest singers. The first one, a guy I was introduced to by our keyboard player at the time, has lost contact most likely due to my moving to Japan. The other two are people I met here. Both of them were effusive in their praise of the songs they appeared on, both did really great-and both of them now seem to be not speaking to me-in the online sense at least. One of them may have even unfriended me on facebook. Now, I believe in my deepest of deeps that this has nothing to do with both of them being women. I think I was pretty clear from the start that it was an artistic collaboration and that`s all. What I am wondering is, is this a case of not working out expectations right up front? were they expecting to be on the cover of a magazine the next week? these were DEMOS, I told them that. I`m another struggling artist, not Skipgali. I would LOVE to have them appear on a CD release of the same songs but it`s the usual issues-spelled M-O-N-E-Y. Anyway kinda makes me sad, they were both people I counted as friends before the project got in the way. whitefang
If there's no way to contact them other than online, and you got no responses there, you may never know what the deal is. If you can contact them another way, I would certainly try. But if it's just casual friendship anyway, it's no BIG loss, is it? Maybe they thought it was way more than you let on, either both career-wise or otherwise. Don't give up collaborating due to it, though. Just learn the lesson and emphisize what it's all about stronger the next time. Whitefang I started out with NOTHING...and I still have most of it left! Larryz
If they were friends, they would still be in touch and not ignore your attempts to contact them. If they feel there was something wrong with the business side of things, they should tell you what it is and take the time to talk it out... SEHpicker
Seems like every time I think the worse when I don't hear back from someone it always turns out to be nothing of the sort. Try not to assume anything until you know for sure. If you once considered them as friends, give them the benefit of the doubt. my 2 cents. skipclone 1
It`s not a big loss unless it`s a pattern. I don`t want to end up having this happen every time I work with someone. I`m trying not to second guess anything but, what am I supposed to think? in one case it was someone who was already well established on her own, in the other it was someone with a hell of a lot of potential. If there`s no real issue it would sure be good to know that before I work with anyone else. Bartholomew
Many of the chick singers I've worked with were flakes and over-emotional - and so are a lot of the guys. Not so much if they're already making $$ in music. Unfortunate but it seems to come with the territory. Also people have other agendas and other issues in their lives that may not be known by anyone outside their immediate family or whatever. I do my best to not let the actions of others influence what I'm trying to produce but sometimes it's difficult not to dwell on it. "Put your head down and keep punching" was always the way I approached it. Some I win...some I lose...some situations in life just don't work...so what. Sounds like song lyrics but it's really positive thinking. Gruupi
People are fickle, musicians especially. Unless you want to end up a hermit(like me), then you just have to get used to looking for people to work with. Even the best of collaborations can end just from life circumstances. Don't take it personally, it's the nature of the business. Winston Psmith
Stupid question here, but could it be a cultural issue, as well? Are they expecting to hear back from you, or maybe some manager type, who's supposed to move the project to the next stage, whatever they may think that is? Otherwise, it seems they'd at least be curious about what happened after the recording session(s), or if anyone was looking to do some more work. I have to admit, I'd be annoyed, or perplexed, if I'd done what seemed to be a successful demo session with someone who just disappeared, afterwards. "Monsters are real, and Ghosts are real too. whitefang
Never thought of that. Yeah, maybe. When I think of the term "demo tape", I think of something submitted to a producer or other label drone in hopes of being picked up for contract of some kind. Did you mention to them that it wasn't neccessarily that kind of "demo"? Whitefang I started out with NOTHING...and I still have most of it left! skipclone 1
Well I may have mentioned before, but one of the songs needs a banjo part to be complete and I have yet to find anyone who can do it-not that I haven`t tried. I also said that the songs were part of a larger project, and when the time was right I would be showing them to whoever would be able to move things forward. I said that, but it`s the kind of statement that can easily be forgotten especially if it looks like nothing`s going to happen overnight. At this point I`m not even sure what I would say to them-assure them that the project is still active or ask why they dropped off the face of the earth. desertbluesman
In reply to your original post. If you have the multi track files, delete the track they did, and get another singer to replace what they did. Hopefully you copyrighted the songs...... dbm If it sounds good, it is good !! http://www.soundclick.com/bands/default.cfm?bandID=143231&content=music
skipclone 1
I did but-I`m not sure I see a reason to do that. If there was a risk they would sue me for releasing the demos and not crediting them-something I would not do-then yea but, if their performances get attention from someone I wouldn`t have an issue with letting them know. I`ll probably end up having to redo with someone else anyway if release versions of the songs are recorded down the road but, why bulldoze the demos? Larryz
But do you really have to have that banjo? LOL! Take care, Larryz
skipclone 1
Well the short answer is, yes. I mean, it doesn`t have to sound like a million dollar production, but I don`t think it`s unreasonable to want all the parts there. That`s the sound of the song after all. Larryz
Just making a joke about banjo's, but they can add a lot to a song...do do do do do...especially if they are an integral part to the sound like in bluegrass for instance. skipclone 1
Hey! I thought the banjo was a GREAT touch in "Take It Easy". Whitefang Yeah that`s kind of the feeling I want but what I have been told is, that it requires a five-string banjo. I have a friend who plays out all the time and is from the deep south, great guy but as soon as I mentioned that song I saw his eyes glaze over.
