mauriziodececco
As a part-part-part time composer of minimalist and repetitive stuff, i wonder if groove machines like the NI Machine can be used for something different than the usual mainstream stuff. I would be nice to have fun with Jazz-friends improvising over repetitive structures. Anybody have experience with such things ? Maurizio OB-6, Modx 7, Rameau upright, Hammond Pro44H Melodica. Philip Clark
I have a Maschine Mikro, and I love it. Very vast and powerful software. Not just for triggering samples, but also for synthesis and production. I'm still wrapping my head around it. My ultimate hope would be able to take a Maschine and a laptop out and to do spontaneous groove-making and improvising my sax over it. stillplaying
It does repetitive stuff really well. Someone on here joked about NI's musical vision being that rootsy Kraftwerk vibe that we all love. A suggestion - maybe invite a creative DJ type (with Ableton Live?) to the jam - tell him/her what you want and you play keys along with your jazzy mates instead of giving NI any more of your cash. I see from your sig you already own Komplete. If you've got Reaktor and Kontakt you've got the useful stuff they do. I'm the piano player "off of" Borrowed Books. The one thing you won't get from Komplete are the great drum samples and grooves that Maschine provides. If you're a fan of Jazzy Hip-Hop/J Dilla, the Conant Gardens expansion for Maschine alone is worth its weight in gold. The previous post seems like an anti-NI rant to me, IMO. No offense. Philip Clark
Also, if you don't feel you're ready to take the full plunge with Maschine. NI puts out a great mini version of it for IOS, the iMaschine. For that matter, there is also an iMPC. stillplaying
LOL. The app route is a good suggestion for toe dippage for pocket money prices - see if it works out for the OP. Get the guys round and get the iPad out and wired into the desk. I'm the piano player "off of" Borrowed Books.
RABid
The problem I have with Machine is I keep trying to turn it into Live, and Live is easier for me. This post edited for speling.
mauriziodececco
Yup, this sound a nice (and cheap) solution to try. mauriziodececco
To report on the test: ok, was fun, but too limited in sound/notes editing to do anything complex. But my seven year son love to jam with it ! Maurizio OB-6, Modx 7, Rameau upright, Hammond Pro44H Melodica.
