Barefaced Generation Three

Hi everyone, it's been a while! I thought y'all might be interested in what I've been working on for the past few years - a whole new range of bass cabs. Need to update the site with photos and stuff but here's the background behind them:

http://barefacedbass.com/technical-information/generation-three-development.htm

And these are the new models:

Rock 'n roll! ;) Might actually find some time to make some more music of my own now...

The Super-Twin looks mighty interesting!!! As soon as I get the bucks for it .... But by then you'll be at generation five, at the rate I'm saving up for new gear

At least I am consistent :) Last night, while browsing for a good, dependable cab to buy as a replacement for the two 4x10's and the 1x15 I have now, it hit me that I might as well go Barefaced (ehm, you know what I mean) and the Super Twelve / Twin seemed like the one for me - again :)

I sold one of the 4x10's last night - waiting on the money to drop into my account and the guy to pick it up - and I'm about 40% there. Hoping for a big end-of-year bonus  Won't contact Alex until I have enough dough, though. So maybe I will get myself a nice birthday present come May 2014 ...

almost ten years ago i suggested to peavey (my employer at the time) that they should invest in 12s because they eventually would be the convergence of 10s and 15s. they responded by basically telling me that most players wanted to buy 10s and 15s. it's good to see someone who is finally investing in tone instead of marketability.

Guy just sent me a screen shot of the wire transfer. Mailed him to ask when he wants to come pick it up. 40% there AND last Monday I had a good end-of-year evaluation so I may place an order with Alex come January :)

Scary: the older I get, the more I keep my word.

I sold another cab (the Behringer 4x10) - lowered my price a little more than I wanted to, but I figured money in the pocket is better than no money in the pocket.

And with that, I just placed a deposit for a Super Twin! Now the wait begins...

My Super Twin arrived today!!! It is gorgeous, to say the least. And the weight, oh the weight ... I feel like I could lift it with my pinky finger :)

Played a bit with it just now, and first impression? The clarity is everything you read about, yet it sounds so much better than I ever dared hope for! On the other hand, I hear every mistake I make

It really makes my trusty old Behringer head (yeah yeah, sue me) come to life. My electric upright never sounded better! Which is good cos I have an "upright only" gig next week ...

Once I break it in, I am sure I will be even more enamored with it!

Since I know the drill ...

I bet it sounds phenomenal (even with a behringer head :D )

:D

Obviously this is the honeymoon stage, and I only played with it for about 20 minutes so far (hoping to get some playing time today, but I have rehearsal tomorrow so no sweat) but it really does sound phenomenal!

I ordered this based on reputation alone, which was a bit of a risk. I did read just about everything there is to read about Barefaced prior to putting in an order (and that includes most of the tech spec stuff on Alex site) but I figured: What the hey, its just a cab! Boy was I wrong :D

It really makes my Behringer head come to life, my overall tone is so much better already. Loud, deep and punchy, crystal clear Obviously I now want a new head but first I will save up for a decent amp cover (suggestions welcome).

I had that same head, used it in a variety of situations, and sold it to a motivated buyer who paid more for it than I did.

It served me well when I had it.

Nice looking cab you have there. I have heard many good things re: Alex's cabs.

I'm a lot more like I am now than I was when I got here.

It's perfectly decent, and if I had a dollar for every time someone complimented me for my tone - with a full Behringer rack at the time - I would have more than a fistful of dollars right now.

Sometimes I get a killer tone out of it, sometimes I can tweak and tweak and never get anywhere. Not sure if it's me or the head - either way, I'm sure it's "all in my head" Thinking of grabbing a second hand MarkBass head if I can find one cheap enough. I really want to hold out for a GK or a Glockenklang, but my funds are completely depleted now :)

Taking the cab to rehearsal tomorrow. Will report back later!

I took it to rehearsal today and was very excited about it, looking forward to it a lot. Sadly, our drummer was obnoxiously loud and my amp had an off-day (some days, for some reason, it simply refuses to give me a decent tone, no matter which way I tweak it) so I was a bit disappointed. Not in the cab, just in the experience :)

Our sound guy (yes, we have one of those ... ) went around the room and said it sounded awesome and carries the bass for miles! The drummer on the other hand said he couldn't hear me. Probably because he plays with earplugs and beats his drums like they owe him money :( But listening back to the recordings I hear a nice and deep sound. It could well be my imagination playing tricks with me, but after the first two hours I already had the idea that there was more bass present in the cab.

almost ten years ago i suggested to peavey (my employer at the time) that they should invest in 12s because they eventually would be the convergence of 10s and 15s.

I always wondered why guitarists need 4x12" speakers, while bass players should make do with 2x10". It seems counter intuitive.

One other curious thing is that speaker sizes are somewhat in the same progression as f numbers in photography multiplied by 10(), that is every step doubles the area, so 4x10 = 2x12 = 15.

Finally, I liked every 12" I heard so far. I think if I could justify to myself a change of speakers I would go for that size first.

The drummer on the other hand said he couldn't hear me.

I always try to position my cab slightly behind the drummer and/or point it partly his way.

A lot of times, especially when there is a sound guy, the drummer will have his own monitor. He should be able to ask for more bass if he can't hear you.

In a perfect world everyone would go direct through the PA and set personal mixes through IEMs. A friend of mine has a JamHub, one of those rehearsal systems where everyone plugs in (he has electronic drums) and you listen through headphones, so you can set your own mix. That's the closest I've come to this ideal and I can say it is nice to be able to turn some people up and others down to my own taste.

If anyone is interested in a sort of A/B:

This is the last track of our rehearsal today. The singer didn't feel like singing anymore so she whistled the tune ...

Venus this week

For some comparison, this is the version recorded LAST week, when I had just the Barefaced cab.

Venus last week

There's a LOT more bass in that little cab already, although I have to admit I put the amp to flat with a wee bit of bass boost today, where last week I had a lot more mid and high dialed in.
