Richard W
My band has a gig next weekend for which we've been preparing. Last night I dreamt that the band was setting up for the gig, but I was very discombobulated: my notebook of charts was in disarray, the order of songs was wrong, when we started playing I found myself separated from the rest of the band way off in a dark corner so that I could barely see anything. In the dream I pick up my mic and amp and carry it towards the front of the stage, but we are playing the wrong song. I know the song we are playing, but I seem to be off by half a step. Still, there is a large and appreciative crowd that cheers at the end of the song. I think to myself "well, that wasn't too bad," but then I notice that I hear another bass playing--someone is totally shredding the part. The crowd is cheering, but they're not cheering me. I turn around but can't see the other bassist. Then I wake up. This is not the first time I've dreamt of being at the gig from hell (to say nothing of the times I've dreamt that I was playing on stage with the Beatles or the Stones, though, oddly, in those dreams I am killing it). I'm confident the actual gig will go well. I'm just curious if others have similar dreams where the wheels fall off during a performance. b5pilot
Well, at least in your dream you weren't naked on stage. You are just going over in your head some of the things that could go wrong. The other bass player is your brain telling you you've got this. Just take note of your dream and prepare accordingly. Just relax, you'll do fine! Lydian mode? The only mode I know has the words "pie ala" in front of it. http://www.myspace.com/theeldoradosband
Steve Force
Suggestion, put your lead sheets into plastic binder sleeves and then place the binder sheets into a binder. tape the setlist sheet inside the front cover then alphabetize all lead sheets. This way if you have a band leader that likes to call out tunes out of setlist order you are covered. Richard W
memorize the songs...... This dream means you are doomed ..... I do memorize songs. I only really use the charts as a set list, having placed the songs in order in my binder. "Everyone wants to change the world, but no one thinks of changing themselves." Groove Mama
You are just going over in your head some of the things that could go wrong. This used to happen to me frequently the night before I had a big court-reporting gig. I'd dream that I arrived late, forgot my machine, etc. I'd wake up in a panic, but after I realized it was just a dream, I was good to go because I had just worked out the worst-case scenario in my head. My brother-in-law, a teacher, would have the same dream the night before the first day of every school year: He was standing before the class and then realize that he was stark naked. The brain is both interesting and bizarre. Queen of the Quarter Note "Think like a drummer, not like a singer, and play much less." -- Michele C. jcadmus
I still dream that I'm in college and I have to go take a final for a class I forgot to go to all semester. "Tours widely in the southwestern tip of Kentucky"
butcherNburn
The only time I have any crazy dreams, that I remember anyway, is when I'm really sick and with a fever. On those rare occasions they are like Scorsese films, sound tracks, back stories, flashbacks and everything. Super realistic but definitely crazy. If you think my playing is bad, you should hear me sing!
