Outkaster
I don't usually post too much about gigging experiences or band problems as I don't think it is appropriate for the forum most of the time. This weekend I had one gig rained out and one cancelled due to possibility of cool weather and football starting today. It's a nice upscale restaurant that we started playing at and tripled the business for the bar since June. Their Sunday crowds were larger than the Friday and Saturday crowds since we started playing there the owner told me. I have never had a whole weekend cancelled like that and it's a bummer but summer is definitely over and I have not one gig on the books. I understand winter get's slower but I have never seen the climate this bleak. How is it for your area of the country? Spring and Summer is huge for us here in the Northeast. RABid
Lull before the storm. Thanksgiving through New Year is a busy time. In this area, the slow time is January and February. In March the weddings start again. This post edited for speling.
Stokely
This is the time of year I start cursing and grumbling about living in Florida. I step outside and start sweating in 3 minutes...in the shade. September means fall, not sauna-like conditions. We've been rained out of several gigs and had to load in while drizzling...that's Orlando in summer/early fall. Not just rain but violent thunderstorms with sideways rain and wind, not to mention lightning, rendering a roof useless for cover outside. I actually like storms but not when a gig is threatened! The heat can go away last week though.
opdigits
It's about 76 degrees here currently (9:30AM) and will reach 97 degrees. It will remain hot generally through October though it won't reach such high temps as it will today. Weather is not an issue here, in regards to seasons of entertainment. Summer ramps up for festivals and other outdoor gigs, but for the most part gigs don't dry up due to weather/season here. Start of football season is one factor that affects some gigs here. Nobody told me there'd be days like these...

Why not? And please don't say we only talk about gear or something. Sorry about the cancellations. I hope things pick up for you. "I'm so crazy, I don't know this is impossible! Aidan
I have a gig in two weeks' time and after that, nothing much at all. Money's very tight and people aren't spending. I'm fortunate that I have enough journalism work to keep me stuffed to the eyeballs at the moment. For band stuff I guess I figured booking and band drama type things were made for a different forum. I am just bummed about the weekend and that the summer is over with nothing booked. I can't have my guys wood-sheding all winter with nothing to look forward to, musicians need to play. Winter is long in NYS so hopefully we can get some work. "Danny, ci manchi a tutti. Joe Muscara
Yeah, I hope you do. When I think of winter up there, all I can see is white. "I'm so crazy, I don't know this is impossible! stevie b
I have never really understood why summer events are so popular in hot climates. You often hear of heat related issues. Seems to me fall would be prime festival weather. People can party and dance away without overheating. it also makes a much nicer load in, load out. For the musos. The only deterrents i can think of are school schedules and ice sales. http://www.suggestingrhythm.com
J. Dan
Actually, around here, summer is the slow time. People go to the Lake ofnthe Ozarks on weekends (about a 2hr drive). A lot of people have lake houses and boats there. This time slows down slightly more even due to college kids going back to school. But Thanksgiving through New Years is the busiest time for bars of the year, plus sept/oct are busy for weddings. Jan/feb are dead, then things start picking backup with Mardi Gras, St. pat's, then in spring the wedding receptions pick back up. Once in awhile we have some freakish cold days in fall months. "Danny, ci manchi a tutti. La E-Street Band non e' la stessa senza di te. Lots of winery gigs in the late summer and fall. That's what people tell me anyway. When an eel hits your eye like a big pizza pie, that's a Moray. Jazzwee
This time of year is really slow for me, every year. It's not weather related though since this is Southern California. But School and Football starts, or something happens. So you're not alone. But I've got 4 next week so that's pretty crowded all at once. It's been zero so far in September so this is good. jpgxk3
I'm on the south shore of Long Island; outdoor venues start to disappear come late Autumn, but we find the indoor work picks up. Try pulling in some chain hotel bars if you can. I was in Rochester in June for a family wedding and we had a few hotels between all the guests. Every hotel bar had live music; cut down bands; small amps/pa systems, drummers were really percussion set ups, usually 3 pieces and maybe a vocalist. I know it probably slows come Winter, but maybe worth a shot if you have some CD samplers to drop off. Good luck man. Joe.
Outkaster
Joe my buddy from HS lives in S. Long Island and said the same thing. He books some harder rock shows but what most owners are telling me is that they close up show when people bring the docks in and close up cottages on labor day/memorial day weekends.
