Rediscovering Feat and Bill Payne

dama

Recommended Posts

I started listening to Little Feat again after our band suggested learning Dixie Chicken and Spanish Moon off the live "Waiting for Columbus" record. I really like Bill Payne's style of playing, both his "barrel-house" piano style and those fat synth parts. He is definitely one of my favorites.

I always liked that style of piano and another favorite is Leon Russell with his four on the floor style ("Feelin Alright" and "the Letter" which we are currently playing). So I'm setting out to learn some of this style a bit better.

Does anyone else here play this piano style or have any suggestions on learning it?

I've discovered my old Yamaha SY85's layered settings can come somewhat close Payne's rich synth sounds. I'm not sure what he's playing - maybe a prophet?

Some more thoughts came to mind.

I think both Leon and Bill Payne have been playing since a very young age. It's challenging for someone like myself to pick it up later in life and I can only spend a limited time on the keys due to some physical issues.

I have thought about listening more to some of their "possible" influences, such as Professor Longhair. Maybe listening more to their playing over and over and picking out some of the fundamentals of their playing is a good place to start. This is how I learned the two songs we play that feature Leon Russell. I can get by well, but I would definitely like to have more of a feel of it.

Payne played an Oberheim 4-Voice on "Waiting For Columbus" album. There are a lot of great videos from this era, including the "Rockpalast" dvd. You'll get to see his hands a lot in that one. For me, watching a player's hands helps tremendously in the comprehension of their technique. Be sure and check out Jon Cleary, a modern giant in the New Orleans piano field.
