Spencer Davis sound.

Recommended Posts

I was watching a YouTube video on the Casio PX-5S by Mike Martin, and there were a few seconds of a very authentic sounding Spencer Davis sound. Can Mike (or anyone else) tell me if this is just a basic PX-5S organ sound - and if so, which one, or was it "finessed" and tweaked?

Thanks in anticipation.

Only Mike M. could say for sure. There are several rock and distorted organs that are stock in the PX-5S. As for "authentic" organs, I've heard much worse on boards that cost twice as much. Does it compare to a clonewheel? Nah.

Kurzweil PC4, NS3-88, Kronos 2-61, QSC K8.2's.

And as good as the new Casio is as a digital piano.... There is no way it can achieve that sound. In fact, its pretty weak when it comes to an authentic Hammond sound.

I'll bet stevie was saying to himself "cmon cant you guys at least find me an L or something"?

I wouldn't call any organ sounds the PX-5S makes "authentic", but that's me.

5:03 Ok, maybe not completely authentic, but it doesn't sound bad to me!

StageSetting 0-6 DistortedOrg.

Thanks for that!

I agree that it is not what I would call completely authentic, but I think it sounds great. I would not hesitate to use that sound in the right context.

I thought the earlier organ sound was more authentic (except for the keyclick, which really didn't do it for me). For the "Gimme Some Lovin" type of tone, which I use a lot, I much prefer my Nord Electro 2 (and no doubt would prefer later Nords, as well as a number of other clonewheels).

Still, I could see myself being happy with a sound like that for practice and jams, where I don't want to carry two keyboards. For gigs, I want two keyboards, and the PX-5S organ isn't quite what I'd want.

That's not "production effects" on the first track. That's bloody awesome push/pull power tube distortion!!!!!

I play this with 858884400, which I believe is very close to the "Full Organ" preset tab on the M100 (which is what the first one was recorded with). I play the G-C bits before the "HEY!" with (00)8866000.

For the part that goes G-Bb-C-Eb, I move smoothly from 8866 to (00)8888000 by the time I'm sounding the C chord; then I kick the Leslie to tremolo and hit the Eb (voiced, I think, 1-3-5-1) on the upper manual, still 858884400. I get slow rotor acceleration artifacts doing this, but it's really close. I think Steve was using Vibrato/Celeste his M100 rather than a Leslie.

Similarly, I think he's using lower manual presets rather than the drawbar settings I've suggested, but again, mine are real close.

Hi learjeff

Mind telling me your settings for the Nord? I am struggling to get the right sound with my electro.

HA! I forgot about the piano part in the album version.....the version I learned from was a live performance which I like very much. Have a listen to the simple left hand work on the great manual:
