jcadmus
String suggestions? I'm thinking DR Legend flats. Anybody use them? I like D'Addario Chrome flats, but I'm a D'Addario guy, so... "Tours widely in the southwestern tip of Kentucky"
jcadmus
Black basses are louder. Red basses are faster. Blue basses are cooler. Darn -- all my basses are sunburst. Where does that leave me? Connecticut? Ostensibly. "Tours widely in the southwestern tip of Kentucky"
b5pilot
Well, since you bought it, and the color is Midnight Wine, why doncha call it "Wino"...Wonderful WINO, the big sound in the big town! Nice George Carlin reference there Picker. Just put some chromes back on my p-5. Can't wait for them to mellow. Lydian mode? Groove Mama
I had LaBella flats on my P bass. Very old-school and sounded great in the studio. Didn't Jamerson have LaBella flats on his P? I am definitely seeking an old-school sound. Just started working on "What's Going On?" Queen of the Quarter Note "Think like a drummer, not like a singer, and play much less." -- Michele C. Nicklab
Congrats on your pending P-Bass, Nancy. I just caught up on the thread, and I'm glad to see you went the used route with Talkbass. There are a lot of good used instruments there at reasonable prices. As for flats, count my post as another one in favor of D'Addario Chromes. They're a great set of flats that won't break the bank. I've got a set on my P-Bass 5 string and they sound just like you would imagine: like a Precision bass with flats. If you do get them be sure to get the long scale set. And if by chance you wind up stringing through the body of the instrument (which you probably won't on a MIM P-Bass), get the Super Long Scale set. Again, it can take a set of Chromes a little while to mellow out and break in, but once they do they sound really sweet. I've had some experience with some other flatwound sets. Surprisingly, a Fender set I tried out a long time ago was pretty good. I've also tried the LaBella Jamerson set. Those strings are super heavy, and may wind up raising your action to an uncomfortable height due to their high tension. Now, if you know a little bit about Jamerson, that high action is something that's authentic to Jamerson since he played with really high action. But unless you're used to it, it's kind of uncomfortable. As for other flatwound sets? I nearly bit the bullet on a set of DR's Legend strings, but I didn't have a bass ready to go for a 4 string set of flats. For my most recent project where I'm building my own P-Bass? Well, I've been eyeing a set of TI Jazz Flats. But those sell for over $70 a set. wraub
I actually just put Chromes back on my J bass, replacing the DRs on there. I am pleased. I'm a lot more like I am now than I was when I got here.

I have a set of 760FL's that I got cheap at BPL last year, but still haven't opened because I'm enjoying the Rotosounds so much. Nancy I can sell those to you if you want, send me a PM if interested. EddiePlaysBass
TI jazz flats are great strings. They are on my fretless and even thought they are expensive, you only have to buy one set. They last forever. Unless you manage to break an A-string, like I did. Seriously, I have only ever broken E and A strings! That's what you get for trying to apply upright rockabilly slap technique to an electric bass. Especially if you hardly have any upright rockabilly slap technique "I'm a work in progress." Appreciate the info and visuals. (Thanks, Ken, too.) I'm thinking I'm with wraub on this one, though: midnight wine and black pg. Of course, I won't know for sure til I see it in the flesh, so to speak. Red (Ibanez) is translucent red with no pg. Ruby is red with white. This new one, yet unnamed, will be different still, in look as well as sound. I embrace the diversity. Thanks again, Wally. Nicklab
Yeah. They're pricey. I've been reading about TI Jazz flats for years, here and elsewhere online. Pretty much everyone raves about them. When I finally got to play a bass that was strung with a set of them, I understood. Granted, those strings were on a Fender Custom Shop Pino Palladino Precision bass. But it was an amazing experience! So if you don't mind the price tag, and don't change your strings all that often, a set of TI Jazz flats might just be what the doctor ordered. And if you're not super-picky about your flatwounds (like I am), I've actually got a spare set of new Fender flatwounds here, Nancy. They're the Fender ML 9050's, with gauges of .050, .065, .085 & .100. They were significantly less when I used TI's on all my basses, but I'll echo Jeremy's response when I say they last FOR-EV-ER ("The Sandlot" ref) especially on my Inca Silver Jazz: http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/ll253/JBFLA/IncaSilverJazz.jpg Jim Confirmed RoscoeHead

Imogene
I've only broken one bass string ever and that was at the post while winding on a TI flat E. Now that string had been on and off the bass multiple times because I used to be schizo about strings. The TI flats are truly unique strings. There is nothing like them and they do last forever if you don't take them on and off and on... But when wraub said: "A bass is a bass. Put flats on that thing and raise the action a bit, and tell me you can't play funk on it" I'm just gonna really have to go with that based on my own experiences. I mean I've been gigging an EBMM SR5 for years. Sounds great and plays great. I also have an old Peavey Patriot that sounds great, plays great and is maybe 2lbs lighter. I gig it when I can sneak it in.

Groove Mama
It's a girl! Or a boy! My new baby arrived today, packaged tightly enough to withstand nuclear holocaust.
