MIDI Control ?

Hello everyone,

I`m a complete noob at keyboards and MIDI, so please bear with me. I recently purchased a Yamaha mox6 and korg microstation. I want to be able to play the microstation voices through the mox6 since it has full sized keys. I have the mox midi out connected to the korg midi in but im only getting sound from the mox. Is there something I`m missing ? Please advise.

Just to clarify the concept, you wouldn't be playing the Microstation "through" the MOX6, you would be playing it from the MOX6.

First thing to check is that the MOX is set to send MIDI out the MIDI port (the MIDI Out of the MOX is switchable between the MIDI port and the USB port).

Maybe this is the best place for a shameless plug! Our now not-so-new new video at https://youtu.be/3ZRC3b4p4EI is a 40 minute adaptation of T. S. Eliot's "Prufrock" - check it out! And hopefully I'll have something new here this year. ;-)

Just to echo what the other guys are saying, the key concept to grasp is that MIDI and audio are completely separate entities. When you hook up the MOX's MIDI out to the microstations MIDI in, you are sending MIDI data, which allows you to control the microstations sounds from the MOX. But you still need to have the microstations audio outputs hooked to speakers, headphones etc to actually hear the microstation once it's been triggered by the MIDI data.

Of course, it could be a more complicated issue you're experiencing, but if you're a true noob, this is the first thing to think about.

Unless a)one of the keyboards has audio inputs (in which case you'd feed the 2nd keyboard's audio out into it and route the combined signal from the first keyboard) or b)whatever speaker(s) you're using have more than one input...you'll need a mixer of some sort as Dan suggested. Doesn't have to be anything elaborate. Could be a little $50 4 channel ART or Behringer mixer. But you generally get what you pay for in terms of sound quality when it comes to mixers.

Thanks guys for the replies. I only have the mox hooked to the speakers. Is there a way to hook both keyboards to the same speakers ?

Although JustDan's mention of a mixer is the usual way to go for multiple instruments, in this case, you don't actually need a mixer. The MOX has an audio input, you can plug the Microstation into that. (Be aware, though, that the MOX can put effects on its audio inputs, so you want to check those settings too.)

I cant find in the mox manual how to switch the midi port. Any ideas ?

Utility Mode-->F6 (MIDI)-->SF4 (Other). See page 150 of the reference manual.

Thanks sooo much guys for the help. I went through the mox utilities and now I can play the microstation through the mox. I do wish to switch back and forth between the two boards so, I guess I will be looking for a mixer or maybe use the audio out from the mox. By the way, both of these keyboards are awesome ! I like some of the patches on the korg more than the mox, especially the sweetwater virtual B3 patches and I like the strings and sound effects of the mox plus it`s overall versatility.

Before you can get your rig to do what you want it to do, you might want to get your basic midi concepts right.

The first part of this tutorial is a nice intro. For more resources, click here, here, and here.

It's not very complicated, and will let you switch back and forth, and many more wonderful things with your rig - once you get your basics right!

Good luck, and enjoy your new MIDI setup :thu:.
