Just checking in now and this is the first I hear of the sad news..... :(:(:(

I guess they are playing his stuff on Sirius this morning. I heard Mulgrew's "Second Thoughts" just now in the car coming home from errands. It's from an Art Blakey live album in '85, "Live at Kimballs". I had never heard the track and wasn't at all familiar with the tune, but after hearing the absolutely stunning solo-I knew it had to be Mulgrew. That got me thinking...uh- oh, I hope it's not a posthumous tribute.

Like I said yesterday then deleted after hoping he could come back--he was a very special player.

RIP.

D-Bon's link doesn't work - a character at the end got truncated. Here's the corrected one.

Rest in peace, Mr. Miller.

RIP Mulgrew. Tony Williams last recording (1998) is when I first heard Mulgrew. Really good playing, especially On Green Dolphin Street and his original Promethean. His intro to Green Dolphin has been a great study and inspiration to learn from this master.

Love that version of GDS where they modulate up after every chorus!

Also Promethean, which is based on 'Day of Wine and Roses' changes. I have a chart for it if anyone wants it. I got it from Josh Nelson.

He played it twice when he was here in April, as I posted above. Great tune. Apparently Blakey recorded it again without him at least once, maybe more.

RIP Mulgrew, those few hours spent with you were nothing short of amazing. I'll always listen.

My first contact with Mulgrew's music was when I heard the Tony Williams quintet many years ago, at the Olimpic Theatre here in Rome. It was an incredible ensemble, I think Charnett Moffett was on bass, and everybody basically was a virtuoso at the highest standards of jazz. It was an enlighting performance; they played with such a freedom and energy and precision, even looking like they were having fun in the process. Great, enjiyable and humbling at the same time.

Rest in peace great musician.

I had never heard that Steve. Not a context you usually hear him in. Beautiful playing by both. My ears perked up on Mulgrew's solo, always loved his choice of notes.

Technique is always a distant second in my book to note choices, phrasing, touch, taste and time feel. Cool changes they used there. Great find.

Definitely a huge void in the creative and artistic musical universe as of today. :(

Live at Yoshi's.
I bought both volumes of this. Fantastic stuff. I wish I had learned about him sooner. Thanks for all the great music, Mr. Miller.
