Paul K
Ladies and Gentlemen; I've an early 70's Univox Coily that I gig with. The tuning pegs are just crap. I saw these on the evil-bay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/6-Chrome-Guitar-String-Tuning-Pegs-Tuners-Machine-Heads-Acoustic-electric-3L3R-/271054970861?pt=Guitar_Accessories&hash=item3f1c229fed Sometimes you get what you pay for, and sometimes you just end up paying way too much for the same product with fancier packaging. And I'm looking to find out which is which before it's too late. Anybody have any experience with tuners of this sort? What's your go-to source for inexpensive functional parts? peace Paul K Things are just the way they are, and they're only going to get worse. Dannyalcatraz
I'm no expert, but that looks scary cheap for tuners. Sturgeon's 2nd Law, a.k.a. picker
I bought similar tuners from China. They've worked okay for about 6 months. Always remember that youre unique. Just like everyone else.
Winston Psmith
I'm no expert, but that looks scary cheap for tuners. I second that opinion. By comparison, the cheapest OEM sets on the Guitar Fetish site are still $12.95, and I'd be leery of those. Good tuners are a good investment - they improve tuning stability, of course, and they can add mass to the headstock, which is supposed to add tone & sustain. That last may seem like less of an advantage if your guitar is already neck-heavy, I understand. If there's a guitar repair shop near you, bring in your guitar, and talk with the folks in there, they may have just what you need, at a reasonable price. Ping tuners used to be considered a decent, if not great, set of tuners, and they show up around $17-20, online. "Monsters are real, and Ghosts are real too. Larryz
MF has many tuning machine sets that range from $50 to $100 which tells me the $8 ones probably are not too well made. I would go with locking tuners and plan to spend about $60... Take care, Larryz
Scott Fraser
You get what you pay for. I don't see much point in trying to save that much money on something which will effect playability as much as good tuners. I would go with a known brand, not a cheap Chinese knockoff. Much agreed -ESPECIALLY if it's the guitar you gig with. SEHpicker The further a society drifts from truth the more it will hate those who speak it." Paul K
I put some Ping's on my Univox Hi-Flyer some time ago. They are way way better than the originals. Not going with locking tuners--I replaced the whammy on the Coily with a trapeze. The old tuners hold tune well, they just are a pain in the ass to get there. Kinda creaky. Suppose I'll follow a couple eBay listings for Grovers. Picker's experience is what I was looking for... Things are just the way they are, and they're only going to get worse.
