podmed
I am playing in a Piano-based cover band, and I need a 2nd KB to cover some Pop-oriented samples (sampled sounds) in some Pop songs. I have a Nord Piano 2 which I love for Piano/EP - but want something else smaller and versatile with a sampler. The Nord can pull off decent 80's Synth needs, and has a limited sampler. I am just interested in basic needs - and multi part samples to different keys on the keyboard with Midi-mapping. My choices: iPad + MIDI controller (like Akai), Korg Microsampler, or Korg Kronos 61. Anyone have any advice? Anyone using iOS based hardware? Thanks! Nord Stage 3-88, Kronos 2-61, DSI OB-6, Roli Seaboards / Blocks, Crumar Seven / Mojo61, iOS apps, Arturia Lab 61... Ekewaka
Mainstage + MacBook Air + 49 key lightweight MIDI controller. Then you have the best of both worlds, Nord for most keyboard work and Mainstage and other SW synths for anything else.
justin_havu
You could always get a used Korg Triton Classic 61, Triton LE 61 or TR-61 with an EXB-SMPL sampling option. It'd be a heck of a lot cheaper than a laptop rig or a Kronos. Just my two cents. Ekewaka
Maybe but a low-cost MacBook Air is $999, get a used 49-key controller, craigslist is full of them and Mainstage is dirt-cheap at the Mac App store. You could use the MBA for other things, too. Or instead of of Mainstage use the standalone NI Kontakt player that has tons of vintage samples and much more available. Might be you need a little bit more RAM for Kontakt so it's good to max out any laptop as memory is cheap nowadays.
podmed
Thanks for your responses! Fortunately, cost is not a restriction for me. Simplicity is. I already have a Kronos 73 - but it is too big and heavy. The Nord weighs enough. The Nord covers vintage synths well - but need something for "Top 40" sound effects (think Bruno Mars, Call Me Maybe). After watching a nighttime of YouTube videos on sampling, I ordered a 2nd Kronos 61. Thanks again everyone....
