Bobadohshe
George Winston caused me more erectile disfunction in the early 90's (when I was 18-21) than you could possibly imagine. I remember seeing all the cool Guaraldi tunes on a George Winston CD and getting it out of the library to check it out. It's really quite amazing how he was able to suck all the marrow and life out of those tunes and leave behind some flaccid shell. Blech. moj
George Winston caused me more erectile disfunction in the early 90's (when I was 18-21) than you could possibly imagine. I can't count the number of times I went over to some chick's place thinking I was about to have a good time, only to get the "Since you play piano, I put on some George Winston. I LOVE George Winston, don't you?" Instant. Boner. Fail. Assuming the chick was hot, George shouldn't matter too much...or maybe she wasn't. Jazz+
No ragtime. But I can play almost everything in the current Top 40 and chicks like that.
Adan
I love playing ragtime, but am not a good reader. But it's my opinion that this it's ok -- and possibly more fun -- to play by ear in this genre. Even if only 80% of the notes are accurate, a large percentage of the casually-observing audiences will still like it as long as you've captured the key melodies and the overall spirit. Of course, it depends on the context. I do my thing in piano bars where I'm covering a variety of material. If people are coming to specifically hear a performance of joplin, they will probably want to hear literal versions. Not sure how George Winston got into the room. Yo, security! The Real MC
George Winston is a very good stride/ragtime player. He's a great player but he doesn't overwhelm me as much as Art Tatum does!!!
moj
Don't derail this thread to a "George Winston hater". OP wanted "some other popular songs? with catchy tunes". George Winston is a very good stride/ragtime player. Yeah, he is, though he's known for his "new age" style (A bore-fest for some). Here's a b*ner bracer by Winston. CEB
Not Ragtime per se but at least it has Rag in the title. The King! EscapeRocks
I love Ragtime. I was fortunate that in my many years of piano lessons, my piano teacher had me study and learn it, beginning with Maple Leaf Rag. I was about 11 then. Outside of all the classical I was studying, Ragtime really helped me develop my hands as independent tools. To this day, I'll do some warmups before a show with some Joplin. I've even been known to throw some pieces and hints of Billy Joel's Rootbeer Rag into my scheduled solos. Crowd loves it. When I was much younger, I would do the old pat your head and rub your tummy thing for a bit, changing hands back and forth, before tackling some monster piece that required independent hand thought on the keys. CEB
One of my favorite playlist from one of my favorite channels. [video:youtube] Also checkout the playlist of remastered Art Tatum. Art is not Ragtime but.... he is Art Tatum. "It doesn't have to be difficult to be cool" - Mitch Towne "A great musician can bring tears to your eyes!!!
