Pedal for Leslie...Why not OD?

So it's no secret that the secret weapon in any clonewheel wielder's arsenal is the Ventilator. We all carry on about how transformative it has been for the clonewheel community. So convenient it is that one pedal can comprehensively enhance the organ experience, making it fuller and more satisfying to the player and the audience. (Insert organ potty humor...now!)

While the Vent has been a milestone in the Leslie sim department, organists also get a bit fuzzed about the overdrive. Time and time again I've read about clonewheel OD falling short, sounding digital, lacking warmth, and being useless after a certain point in the dial.

My question is, like the Ventilator, is there an external solution to this issue? A pedal? A head? An amp?

The obvious answer is a real Leslie, that's not where I'm going with this.

Yes there have been several over the years. The old BK Butler Blue Tube units were available as rack unit or pedal.

Speakeasy preamps are the Cadillac of preamps.

ciao!!!!

(happy new year!)

CAUTION!!!!!

LONG MESSAGE!!!!

:)

I used, in these last years, the following pedals/rack, both with clonewheel organ (KEyBDuo - SK2) and with my vintage 1964 C3 (with Ventilator and with Leslie 3300 or MS Pro-3X or MS Pro 145).

I think in this moment these are the best possible solution for ORGAN sound....

SPEAKEASY AMA 122:

TUBE AMP MANUFAKTUR ORGAN DRIVE:

(I'm NOT an endorser - I'm not a musician at all :laugh: - but they asked me to link one of my videos in the demo section of that site!!!!)

THIS SHOULD BE THE RIGHT-PRICED ALTERNATIVE TO SPEAKEASY

BUTLER AUDIO TUBE DRIVER:

http://www.butleraudio.com/tdbias.php

this one has, for my taste, the best tube overdrive BUT it need to be adapted for ORGAN use (problem of lost frequencies, as it is originally thinked for guitar) but the manufacturer (that is a organist!!!!!) provide this kind of customization.

I tryed many other guitar overdrive pedals, analog tube or digital ones, but (apart from the http://www.voodoolab.com/giggity.htm) each of them has a really strong "guitaristic" frequencyes cut, so tipically there are many missing details of the organ sound (keyclik, leakage, chorus with an alterated sound, etc.)

here some audio and video examples:

hammond C3 --> speakeasy AMA 122 --> Neo Instruments Ventilator:

hammond C3 --> Organ Drive --> Leslie 3300:

hammond C3 --> Organ Drive --> MS Pro 145:

hammond C3 --> Organ Drive --> Leslie 3300 and AMT M2 (Marshall Amp Simulation) in parallel:

hammond C3 --> WoodooLab Giggity --> Leslie 3300:

SK2 --> Ventilator and Zoom G3 (Guitar Amp Simulation) in parallel:

hammond C3 --> Speakeasy AMA 122 --> Leslie 3300

SK2 --> Various Settings (LONG VIDEO! see video info for time index):

hammond C3 --> Ventilator and Behringer V-Tone (Guitar Amp Simulator) in parallel:

hammond C3 --> Speakeasy AMA 122 --> Ventilator:

KeyBDuo --> Ampeg SVP-BSP --> Ventilator:

KeyBDuo --> Speakeasy AMA 122 --> MS Pro3-X:

KeyBDuo --> Speakeasy AMA 122 --> MS Pro3-X:

(obviously I'm not using the hardest possible distortion from the preamp pedal, but eventually I prefer to use a parallel Guitar Amp Simulator in order to emulate the Jon Lord / Don Airey Sound).

I have the Original Tube Driver that Butler designed and were first distributed by Chandler. I ran my XB-2 through one.

The bias knob was part of the original rack unit it just wasn't part of the pedal version.

You beat me ...

I have the Chandler rackunit too and used/use it for organ.

The BIAS control on the rack unit is great.

I didn´t like the stock tube though, replaced it by a military grade one, but forgot which exactly.

Nontheless, it´s a preamp only and doesn´t mimik the overdrive of a leslie poweramp.

I think that´s what Speakeasy and Vent do.

The Keyboardpartner MIG does too
