Tobias Åslund
Well, one is 6 part multitimbral with pianos organ and VA synth with samples and cost about $4000. The other is a two part multitimbral organ with additional sounds and cost about half as much. Yes there are similarities, but not really a fair comparison. The Stage 2 has a huge, ever growing library of sounds - pianos and other instruments, probably hundreds. The SK1 so far has what, ten small libraries of extra sounds? Edit - well, I see they are only comparing organ sounds. Well, ok... move along! I think what is interesting is how similar the two tonewheel engines sounds, when the Leslie sim is disabled. When engaging the sim, however, they sound very different. I made the same comparison with my old XK1 and the Electro 3 I had before - very similar without leslie, very different with. I guess through a Ventilator or a real Leslie you wouldn't hear much difference at all. Too much stuff, too little time, too few gigs, should spend more time practicing...! 🙄 main instruments: Nord Stage 3 compact, Yamaha CP88, Kurzweil PC4, Viscount KeyB Legend Live
pawel
We compare only the organic sound, It is very similar to the much more expensive instrument( Nord2). Which instrument can be compared from the Nord? Kurzwei PC3xl Pc2x , K2600x, fender Rhodes, Novation xio, Novation x station, Yamaha sk20, Yamaha motif rack es ,plg-150 vl . Tobias Åslund
Electro 3 is at least in the same price range, but it's organ sounds about the same as the Stage 2 - I actually found the Stage 2's organ sim a bit more polite (in a negative way), not able to recreate the same bite as similar setting of the Electro 3. Although, this difference was quite subtle. I really don't like the Leslie sim in these Nords - they need a Ventilator or real Leslie to sound authentic. Hopefully the Nord Electro 4D will have quite a bit better Leslie sim. Early reviews of the C2D, which should have the same clonewheel engine the Electro 4D, seem very positive - some even say the new sim is almost in Ventilator territory... almost... Tobias Åslund
When I think of it - a more interesting comparison would be the SK2 (although it should sound identical to the SK1) and a Nord C2D (and while you're at it - throw in a Mojo in there as well... To B3
Would love to see the same kind of comparison with the other sounds, especially the electric pianos and clavs, with the effects engaged, of course. To B3
They are performance instruments, not purely organs, aren´t they? The other sounds are important in that context. My drawbars go to eleven. jazzdoc52
I have a Nord stage 2 76 HA, and although I havent played the SK1 or 2, I am absolutely blown away with the Nord. The keyboard action is perfect for me as far as the piano voices, and the sound quality of the pianos are too. Running the organ voices through a Vent, I just dont know if I could find a better tonewheel sim than this board. I know its on a different price scale, but it is worth it to me. I played a solo gig this last weekend with this board and the Roland Bk-7m backing module and it sounded like a 4piece jazz group. Very impressed! Charleston
As far as the SK1: When you were in "just organ - no leslie" mode, was it stopped or bypassed? (The cab sim is still on when "stopped" - therefore coloring the sound) What leslie/cab settings were used? Which "organ type" was used? My point is, there isn't one SK1 "sound" to either the organ or leslie sim. So maybe letting your viewers know these settings may help in knowing what exactly is being compared. resigned
The SK2's multitimbral capability means I won't be buying a Vent. Not only is the SK's leslie sim very good but I get a lot of usage out of being able to have an AP or EP on the lower manual and a genuine Hammond organ on the upper at the same time. And I like the simplicity and sound that I get from the SK2 by running direct stereo lines into my MS KP-500sn and using the amp's stereo enhancement feature to widen both sounds. I agree that it's not really fair to compare the Nord C2D and the Hammond SK2 - the SK2 does so much more and costs so much less...
Jim Alfredson
Honestly with the overall quality of the products on the market today, chose one that fits your budgetary and interface needs and you'll be fine. Well, we only seem to be comparing organ sounds here, so I guess any clonewheel will do, no matter it's extra features. That being said - I agree with B3er. All modern clonewheels sound damn good, so just buy one and start playing!
