ProfD
Donna Summer's voice over Giorgio Moroder produced tracks kept the dancefloor packed and jammed on the radio during the heyday of Disco. StevenS
Disco didnt suck. It was amasing for young kids. Everybody could go out, have fun and DANCE! Donna Summer did one of the first electro-hits "i Feel love". A tune i loved when I was 16 years old. I think disco changed the music scene in a very positive way back then. In Sweden, disco was unfortunately banned of political reasons (and pretentious snob reasons)
GDP
If you were a working musician in the 70's, you know why disco sucked. RIP Ms. Summer......
marino
Disco sucked...but this is still sad news: RIP. Exactly. Being raised musically in the early '70s, the first time I heard disco I thought, "Um, that's a joke, right? *Please* tell me it's a joke!" Stevie Wonder once said, "When I hear disco, I hear a march, setting us to war." But Donna was so beautiful, energetic, sensual, and just alive, that one can only be saddened by her departure. RIP Donna Summer.

mate stubb
Playing disco 6 nights a week to packed houses sucked... but I was working 6 nights a week, partying, travelling the country and making the best money of my career. This cut still rocks, RIP Donna: [video:youtube] Moe --- "I keep wanting to like it's sound, but every demo seems to demonstrate that it has the earth-shaking punch and peerless sonics of the Roland Gaia. Geoff Grace
She was a talent with a larger than life voice, and I'm sad to see her go--especially at 63, which isn't exactly a ripe, old age. RIP Donna. retrokeys
In the late 1970's in my hometown virtually every bar had a band, many 6 nights a week. One could find any type of music one wanted. In the summer of 1978 I played in a disco band making the best money I ever made in music. It helped pay for graduate school. There was a dj who spun records during our breaks. It wasn't very long before the club owner discovered that people danced and drank regardless of who provided the music. It was the same everywhere. By the end of the decade there were no house bands anywhere. DJs who charged a 10th of what band had to took over virtually everywhere. Disco began a train of circumstance wherein bands today make what they did in the 1970's. No reason to hate disco? Donna Summer could sing and her death is sad but yes, disco sucks. Big time. DaveMcM
This being a keyboard focused forum, I am surprised by the dislike of an era of music where keyboards were the predominant instrument. I enjoyed those days because I had real parts to learn that were essential to the music and that demanded a multi-keyboard rig to pull off. There were definitely some cheesy songs back then, but also a lot of fun stuff. Wm. David McMahan I Play, Therefore I Am
Cygnus64
Disco is one of my guilty pleasures. No need to feel guilt. When we play it at symphony pops, 2,000 people are on their feet dancing, ages 5-90. Compared to the shiat on the radio today, it was like Beethoven as played by God. It's a blast to play and audiences love it, ain't much more one can ask for. A lot of bars fired bands and replaced them with DJs around that time. People blamed disco--and that was indeed part of the equation--but I think it had as much to do with advances in technology that allowed sound systems to finally compete with bands in both volume and fidelity. I have no ax to grind against disco. I don't like it as much as funk, but there's a lot of disco I like. I also think hating a whole genre of music often indicates a degree of narrow mindedness. But most of all, I think this discussion of disco merits its own thread and Donna Summer's death merits a discussion about her instead. timwat
Like a lot of artists, Donna Summer may be defined by most by one genre, but she wasn't that for me. Disco was what brought her fame and presumingly fortune, but as a person she was more than just a disco singer. God bless, Donna, and loved your voice. [video:youtube] .. Chad Thorne
If you were a working musician in the 70's, you know why disco sucked. I was a working musician in the 70s. I don't feel that way, never did. I understand why guitar players might feel that way - no wheedly-wheedly guitar solos - but good music is good music. Even the stuff I don't like, like opera. mate stubb
The thing I couldn't stand was the constant 4 on the floor beat, and the mind numbingly stupid lyrics. "push push in the bush" "disco, disco duck" etc, gag. Musically, there were a lot of elaborate string and horn arrangements. But after awhile, yes, it sucked. retrokeys
Yep "Party, party, party, party. Dance, dance, dance, dance (repeat)" and let's not forget the ever present falsetto "whoop whoop." To this day I would rather slide down a 100 foot razor into an alcohol bath than relive that stuff.

LX88
Disco or not, I loved "Bad Girls". That was a great track. As Duke Ellington once put it, it was BEYOND CATEGORY. That tune - to me- seemed set the stage for post disco artists like Rick James.... great groove , horns etc. This one kind of shocked me and once again , a wake up call for us to realize how time is flying by. We sure are seeing a lot of R.I.P's lately. Donna was in her twenties during her heyday.
