Bosendorphen
The main website archives? I'll have to look into that. The "other archives" I have in my studio (every issue of the print version). But it's nice to have the more recent things online for search purposes. My dream (and others' on the forum) is to have the entire run online, indexed and searchable. Of course the required work (not to mention copyright issues and logistics) would be immense. Joe Muscara
My dream (and others' on the forum) is to have the entire run online, indexed and searchable. Of course the required work (not to mention copyright issues and logistics) would be immense. I'd love that. What gets me is that they've had digital versions online for years, then someone decides to change the back end software and all those issues/articles disappear. This has happened a few times. Since I have almost every issue going back to around 1988 (plus a couple odds and ends), I'd settle for a searchable online index so I could look for a product or artist and find which issue to pull from my library. ITGITC
Where is your Playboy collection? The last time I was at Joe's house, I found his collection of Playboy and Penthouse magazines here: http://www.cristar.com/images/bathroom.jpg I don't see them in this picture. Perhaps they have taken up residence in the Mustscareya Alt-Lib: http://27.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_ly2ce3HAiE1r3hyudo1_500.jpg I know, I know. That picture is kinda deceiving because from the outside, it looks like this: http://www.oletimer.net/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/outhouse.jpg "Music expresses that which cannot be put into words and that which cannot remain silent." - Victor Hugo

Joe Muscara
That's what she said. Tom - You nailed it. (of course, I mean that figuratively. If you hit it with a real nail, it will probably fall down. Please don't do that.) "I'm so crazy, I don't know this is impossible! Hoo hoo!" - Daffy Duck "The good news is that once you start piano you never have to worry about getting laid again. Seannn
Can Steph weigh in on the digital archives? I agree that while this would be a large undertaking, it's a great idea! Bosendorphen
Since I have almost every issue going back to around 1988 Where are you storing 300 issues? They're called "shelves." Wonderful invention. Indeed. I know you're "supposed" to have them stored vertically, but I have my laying flat, stacked on shelves. They do stay very flat that way with no curving pages or spine issues. I did try those binders with the plastic holders which slip over the pages with the support in the center (where the staples are). But it took up much more space and I need SO MANY binders it wasn't worth it. Maybe lying flat it's a bit harder to access that particular issue you want, but that's the fun for me. I go looking for something and get delightfully sidetracked on other issues with articles I'd forgotten about. Fun! I have all 434 issues going back to 1975 and they only take up a few shelves. Plenty of room for more. "The devil take the poets who dare to sing the pleasures of an artist's life." - Gottschalk Soundcloud Aethellis
Joe Muscara
I used to have them in boxes. I had these great little boxes I got from a previous job that were somewhat small so they weren't too heavy (prior to that, I used to keep them in milk crates. Ugh! That weighed a ton). But they weren't very accessible in those stacks of boxes. It is easy to get lost in old issues of Keyboard mag. "I'm so crazy, I don't know this is impossible! Sven Golly
Can Steph weigh in on the digital archives? I agree that while this would be a large undertaking, it's a great idea! He has, in the Keyboard Editor forum: Hi everyone, This is our dream as well, and resources, man-hours, etc., are indeed the biggest challenge. I personally think it would be one of the most sellable things we've ever done. There's talk of having it be online as well. I think for a searchable PDF / multimedia database, the way it'd have to work would be for us to find someone who's willing to take on all the heavy lifting: scanning, tagging, indexing, sharpening pictures, making everything compatible with today's digital world, who the company could cut a deal with for a percentage of the proceeds. That something like this could exist as a paid website, flash app with an online connection, iPhone app, or anything where rotating ads from current advertisers could be served is what would make our management and ad sales team drool--and also what could make a project of this magnitude profitable, which it would have to be if the folks in our company who have power of the purse are to go for it. nmcq
Why don't you just re-link to what used to be available? It covered a lot of years, and would be way more helpful than not having anything available. You could set it up as the "old, imperfect, and not quite complete archive...provided as a resource while we're working on the full version". That way, you're covered and people understand what it is. Really, it was very helpful before as the link "Archive", and is still probably sitting on a hard drive somewhere, and would be super easy for you and super helpful for us -- your customer community. :-) Thanks, Neil Can Steph weigh in on the digital archives? richwhite9
Used to be really valuable, now I can't find a link anywhere, even hidden. Anybody know? thx Neil I think you should up the ante on this. The 20th century is becoming open piracy anyway -- with some subscriber sponsorship. I don't know if this is Steven's thing as to who owns the pre-2000 issues. There's something weird going on when the entire Vonnegut catalog can be bought cheaper than the Keyboard archive. We know the archive is priceless and can't be monetized. Actually, I;ve got some great ideas and may take them to Steven off line if he's the contact person. Edit: OK. Did I do that just to set Sven in motion? No. Damn mobile devices. OK. You are rght, I did it to bait Sven.

Stephen Fortner
Hi all, I'm making our web team aware of this thread, and by web team I mean a couple of very nice and very overworked people responsible for the back ends of all websites across the company. We switched to a new CMS some time ago, and we needed to--the old one was so clunky it took 20 minutes to get a simple press release up. But this also seems to be the point when a lot of the older articles became unavailable. I agree, it IS on a hard drive somewhere, but I don't personally have the ability or knowledge to relink to it. I can post new stuff, and edit stuff that survived the transition, but if it doesn't exist in the database my only direct option is to repost articles manually. It's a frustration for me as well that I can't pull up an article from, say, 2002 when I'm working on something new.
