Komplete 8?

I can get it for $230, after seeing what's included, it really is a no-brained, jess?

I have K5, but now I'm seeing that a few of the newer libraries only run on Kontakt 4 as a minimum.

So mayhaps I should pull le trigger.

Anyone using that can heartily endorse?

Because I didn´t upgrade to Window 7 up to now, I´m still w/ Komplete 7, but that´s the only reason.

As soon I´ll have a new machine and Win7, I´ll go Komplete 8 Ultimate.

The standard Komplete 8 edition might not be such a big advantage over Komplete 7, but Ultimate will be.

I think, for everyone owning any previous Komplete version, but not Komplete 7,- Komplete 8 standard edition is a no brainer too.

OTOH, I don´t know what NI summer- or x-mas sales will bring.

These were always the cheapest ways upgrading Komplete.

For sample libraries, I'd say yeah. Kontakt 3.5 is pretty long in the tooth.

If you're using the synths, though, I wouldn't bother. Absynth didn't change in any appreciable way, Massive/FM8 not at all. Can't comment on Reaktor.

I am still on Komplete 6, running win 7. What is the compelling reason, if any, to upgrade to Komplete 8? Just curious. Thanks.

For me, it would be the amount of libraries in Komplete 8 Ultimate.

P.ex. all the drums not being incl. in Komplete 7 are also not in Komplete 8,- but Ultimate.

Same rules for the session drummer instrument as well as session strings pro.

All the Scarbee basses ...

And with all this stuff, I´d don´t need too much other VSTi, it´s only 1 installation and easy maintenance, just launching service center and getting all the updates if available.

At that price I'd do it. I'm on K3.5 and REALLY need to upgrade...seems like upgrade $ on just KONTAKT was close to the $230 figure you quoted (a little less, but not much)...where are you getting that deal?

LOTS of great new stuff in Komplete 8, mostly Kontakt stuff: Scarbee Funk Guitar, Rhodes, Scarbee basses, Vintage Organs, Studio Drummer.

Kawai C-60 Grand Piano : Hammond A-100 : Hammond SK2 : Yamaha CP4 : Yamaha Montage 7 : Moog Sub 37

Ultimate is bloody impressive, but I have a lot of the synths already.

A lot of the content is really cool, but I don't think I will ever have enough time during the week to actually check it all out, let alone make use of it.

I still have bagfuls of Omnisphere that I haven't heard yet...and I've had the program 4-5 years?

Even with the savings, it would still cost me $780, a tad prohibitive seeing as I just dropped $2k on my new DAW...

Studio drummer looks like a great replacement for Acid though...

I am not necessarily the best acoustic drum programmer in town, but I have found that Studio drummer has quickly become my go to drums (for non EDM).

You get a lot of stuff with K8, but for me most of it is just bloat. And a lot of it sounds dated. I understand this is important for longtime users who need the backward-compatibility, but I could do without most of it and never know the difference.

Perhaps there is more fun to be had for real programmers, what with Absynth, Reaktor and Massive, but I'm a simple preset tweaker.

Ultimate is bloody impressive, but I have a lot of the synths already.

That´s my situation too, in hardware and software.

The problem:

Too many different "systems" to deal with,- the functionality, the preset management, the updates/upgrades.

Actually I start thinking "block-wise":

1.)VST:

Host = Presonus Studio One Prov2

NI Komplete, OPX Pro II, Zebra 2.5, Waldorf WAVE 3V.

Memorymoon synths.

2.)Phead

Reason 6, RE w/ v6.5 (hope for Korg Legacy Edition)

3.)DSP

Sonic Core SCOPE/XITE-1 replacing a lot of hardware inkl. mixer and AUX/Insert FX, signal splitter, AUDIO (ASIO)/MIDI interface.

Minimax, Prodyssey, Profit-5, Vectron, Uknow7 cover most vintage sounds latency free which is a much better realtime playing experience than VST.

I´m just figuring out MIDI CC and preset management stuff w/ KURZ PC361 setups.

A lot of the content is really cool,...

Studio drummer looks like a great replacement for Acid though...

I think 2-way:

For live usage, I don´t need much VST stuff, for studio usage I need more,- just for the occasions.

Live, from NI I´d only use Kontakt and eventually FM8 plus OPX-Pro II and Memorymoon Messiah, but in the studio, I´d use all VST on demand.

Same w/ Phead,- live I´d use Thor and Bitley´s Platinum XXL refill, but probably much more in studio situations.

I´ll eventually never need virtual drums, basses, guitars and (cinematic) specialist sample libraries live, but in the studio, yes.

I want all on one machine and mobile,- Komplete 8 Ultimate, for me, would be ideal in this combination.

See that my deal as well--I have other options. Somehow NI irritated me a few year back with (Komplete 4?) when they removed some features, and I haven't felt the same about them since. As mentioned, I do have Komplete 6 and like it. However, my go-to soft synths are now Alchemy and BFD for drums. Having some pretty sweet hardware synths in my mancave (Moog, DSI MEK/PER, Prophet 08, Korg Kronos, and now a synthesizers.com modular) along with several soft-synths gives me some real options.

I felt the same w/ NI some years ago and wanted to leave that route, but than made the upgrade from Komplete 5 to 6 for cheap summer sale.

It changed all because I recognized how well the Service Center worked then and they had optimized their installers and some more.

Since then, I found it very comfortable to work with their software again.

With Komplete 7, I´m very happy.

I still run Kontakt 3.5 beneath Kontakt 4.x by compatibility reasons as also some stuff from the older versions incl. Pro53, B4II etc ...

No question, we all have many options.

I too have many hardware synths and modules, but can be,- MinimoogD and Oberheim Xpander as well as 1 FM synth (Yammi TG77 or FS1r) will be the only vintage instruments I keep for the future and I probably won´t take these out of the home anymore by several reasons.

I see a new DP, my Kurz PC361, Edirol PCR300 and eventually my Yammi KX76 controlling all the software stuff live, maybe replacing the KX by a J.B. Solaris later.

I´m watching the evolution of the Physis piano.

How does Studio Drummer compare to Superior 2.0? I'm using EZ Drummer and it's time to either upgrade or jump ship.

What acoustic pianos come with Komplete 8? I have Komplete 6 and find the pianos unusable.

I can't really speak to Studio Drummer, but I've been really happy with Superior 2.0. The sounds & level of control is pretty insane, but it's a pretty easy interface. It'll also read whatver EZ libraries you already have.

Just watched some Superior demos. Nice bits there for sure. Similar to Studio Drummer with more control?

Alright, I ordered Komplete 8 last night.

Looking forward to checking our those Scarbee plugs & Studio Drummer.

Please report back how you like it. I'm in the exact same boat except I currently have K6. I'm looking for better drums than EZ Drummer, a good acoustic piano (there are no usable ones in K6 IMO), and a good Harpsichord.

Probably the best harpsichord at this point is the just-released Kontakt library from SPitfire Audio. It's 99 euros(?) but was on sale for a few days when it was released last month. Unfortunately the announcement was so limited that I didn't see it in time. You can download the PDF to study it, and listen to the awesome demos.

I spent WAY too much on harpsichord libraries (and Roland's previous digital harpsichord model) over the years. I did a thorough review of them last weekend and find most of them unusable (this includes the ones from Realsamples).

VSL's is quite good, however. But it costs a bit as it is part of a "Special Keyboards" collection that also includes Prepared Piano. Right now -- until I buy the one from Spitfire -- it is my top choice.

Soniccouture's Conservatoire Collection is also excellent, but it is recorded so softly that I'm not yet sure if there is a bug in the .nki files.

Other than that, the French (but not Dutch) Harpsichord from Precisionsound is limited in its programming but recorded nicely. Not enough variations of manuals though (VSL is a bit limited as well).

Surprisingly, as of Pianoteq 4, its French Harpsichord is now very realistic sounding and quite playable. But due to the choices in the GUI, you can't really use it to go between different manuals or manual combinations.

I'm not sure how harpsichord came up in the context of Komplete 8? My recollection is that the only one it includes is in the GM set.

Well Komplete 8 is installed and ready to go.

The pianos are all very nice, especially the Berlin.

Scarbee Wurli, Rhodes & Clav are all stellar.

Kontakt 5 has an improved I/F over 3.5, and you can adjust the window to any size, instead of the previous 3 only choices.

Studio Drummer sounds fantastic, and the loops are very good.

Retro Machines is a download, and is about 3.7G. You receive an email link after you register.

They have the Mini Korg 700s (very cool, since I have the real thing).

You also get a $30 voucher for whatever suits your fancy, AND they've updated the Abbey Road drums to have the same features & functionality as Studio Drummer (full loop library & more velocity levels). This is also free, and a heavy download at 6.5G.

The Komplete 8 install is 12 double layer DVD's, and took me all of Saturday afternoon to load, in between yard work & other stuff.

I have to say that I've always found the NI acoustic sounds to be lacking, but not anymore.

This is a great package, and well worth it for me coming from Komplete 5.

There doesn't seem to be any harpsichord in the orchestral library, sorry Cyg.

Thanks for the review, it's very helpful.

This is good to know. I feel the same with Komplete 6(Kontakt 4). It's uninspiring to me. Overall I don't care as I have plenty of other choices, but I'm in need of a good piano and more drums, so I'll probably give it a whirl.

Dan - what did you install your Komplete 8 on to? You mentioned a new 2k DAW?

Mac? PC? - can you take it out live?

It's a Rain Ion, Win7 64bit machine.

No plans to take it anywhere, it's a large, rack mounted monolith.

Oh yeah, and the audio interface is the Steinberg UR824, sounds terrific.
