EscapeRocks
I made the mistake of hooking up a friend's laptop to my new MOX8 to try out the seamless USB midi connection. As you know, the MOX can be your audio interface, with front panel controls. Started out playing NI's Alicia Keys, then NI's Retro Keys M2. He also had some Pianoteq stuff. Dammit. Why'd I have to go and do that? I feel like the I'm facing the Borg and resistance is futile. By the way, the MOX8 > Laptop USB/MIDI interface is really cool! Tonysounds
Don't play Omnisphere. or Pro53. Or Mtron. or MiniMonstah. Or OPX-Pro. No, don't do it. Hitting "Play" does NOT constitute live performance. -Me.
EscapeRocks
I appreciate the "help". Playing these software instruments made it seem like I was playing my Steinway instead of a digital piano. CEB
I have really bad gas. I knew better than sitting in front of that Kawai RX-6. No sure why it came in to the store unless the owner died. That aint happening with the oldest starting college this fall. If you want some freebies Sonigen Modular is really cool. If you want a cheaper commerical synth I like Messiah a lot. johnchop
Don't play Omnisphere. If I had been intelligent enough to buy one software synth and make the most of it, it would have been this one. (Of course, I can still make the most of it. I just need to uninstall everything else.) I make software noises.
allan_evett
Ah, David.... You've gone and opened the Pandora's box o' GAS. In addition to Omnisphere, VB-3, NI, et al., don't mess with any of the SampleTank stuff, the HALIonSonic sounds, and especially not OPX-Pro. Have all of that except OPX-Pro, and sometimes I think that one is 'pursuing' me. The Hollow Sun CP70 is killer, though. Bet you'd like that.. It's a Kontakt instrument though, and you definitely want to avoid getting near KOMPLETE 7/8 'Someday, we'll look back on these days and laugh; likely a maniacal laugh from our padded cells, but a laugh nonetheless' - Mr. Boffo. mate stubb
The GFORCE stuff is all great. My fave synth is actually ImpOscar. Fabulous lively sound! MTron has already been mentioned, but I like Oddity a lot also. It's very simple, but even the basic sound of a single oscillator is great. Tonysounds
Yeah, Oddity and ImpOSCar are awesome, but they don't appeal to everyone. And man oh man, do I LOVE Gforce's VirtualStringMachine. Crazy! EscapeRocks
See? he's even using a keytar. Tony, you'll have to use one in your GW trib. LOL. Another question: I have a laptop with a new clean install of Windows 7. 500GB 7200rpm,16mb cache HDD. 4GB ram, AMD 64 dual core 2GHZ. Will this work for stand alone things like some of the Kontakt instruments, etc? I know this exceeds the mins suggested on software I've looked at, but there's mins, and then there's reality. Thanks! David Loving
I'd recommend Kontakt5. I'm running it on a Macbook Pro i5. Your 7200 rpm windows 7, dual core ought to handle it fine, but that said, I know nothing about windows pc's. The NI website will tell you if that's enough horsepower. You'll get plenty of pianos to experiment with. I like Kontakt5 - taken to gigging with it stand-alone. All I use are New York Grand, Tonewheel B3, Scarbee Mark I, A-100, a Neo-Soul suitcase Rhodes, transistor Organ and Continental Organ. I play either a PX330 or a Behringer UMX610 for notes, Korg NanoKontrol (9 sliders, etc for B3) and a Presonus Audiobox usb Their vintage organs are great, IMO. Give it a try. Once you use it for gigs it's hard to lug around heavy boards + the sound is so good. "Forget it, Jake. It's Chinatown."

David Loving
EscapeRocks, you probably have the controller capability with the MOX8 to not need all the extra stuff like I have to use. Kontakt will handle program changes (one instrument to another) if you set the sounds you want in "instrument banks" and set up your controller to operate through the "Scroll" icon near the NI logo on the upper left. NI has a fine forum that answers tech questions fast and that's how I found all this out. http://www.native-instruments.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=4 "Forget it, Jake. It's Chinatown." EscapeRocks
Thanks again! I've been messing around with the MOX8 and Kontakt 5 Player. I got and have loaded Alicia Keys, Retro Machines Mk2, and the "factory selections" that came free with the free Kontakt player. All works very well. I made my next huge "mistake" in going to the websites of OPX-pro, and VB3. Being a huge 80's geek, the OPX-Pro is next on my acquisition list. I might not leave my house for a week!! hoggernick
I made the mistake of giving VB3 a listen. Then I drug out my wife's old macbook air that she doesn't use anymore and tried the demo of VB3. Big mistake. I discovered that it blew away the Roland VK8 I've been happily gigging with for almost a decade. I also discovered that the old MB air wasn't powerful enough to run many VSTs through. So, a couple of weeks later and I've really GAS'd out. Bought a new i7 laptop, VB3, Presonus interface, Roland A550 controller with 9 drawbars, and put eight synths out for sale on craigslist. Complete turnaround. I've also seen the light with recording, I see no need for my Tascam Neo24 anymore either. The future is now, man. allan_evett
....... I made my next huge "mistake" in going to the websites of OPX-pro, and VB3. Being a huge 80's geek, the OPX-Pro is next on my acquisition list. Thanks for returning the 'favor'.... Now I'm really GASsing for OPX/OPX-Pro; going to check out demos of the Mac based solutions this week.. VB3 is simply the best software based clonewheel I've ever played; records great, and kicks ass live. I used it via a Muse Receptor, which I recently sold. As soon as I get my Mac software instrument hosting choice settled, it's going back into my live rig. zukskywalker
Ah, the sweet innocent beginnings of Virtual GAS. It's insane I tell you! I must have thousands of vst's, been thru stacks of laptops, and search like a shark for code. Woe unto thee for whom gas of software overtakes that of gear! That being said, VB3 is my pillar of light, for once I hauled Hammonds and things with rotors and it's simply "it". KVR forums are pretty much the reference for soft gas and theres a steady stream of dev there, but there's almost too much to pick thru.
