Junior 1
Anybody have the new Fender Gretta 2 watt tube amp? Looks good for a bedroom picker like me.
Caevan O’Shite
Haven't seen one in real-life yet, but I have been getting into low-watt tube-amps in general. They're the shiz! Junior 1
I've seen the demos, but I want to get someones opinion who has or tried one. I use a Pignose with some pedals and like it. A 2 watt tube amp will distort quick like a Pignose so your control is with your guitar. I'm sure different types of pickups will give different sounds. Caevan O’Shite
A 2 watt tube-amp may be louder than you might expect, as well. I know people are always surprised that my Lucky 7 is only 7 watts; I have to build a veritable blanket-fort around its speaker to be able to use it the way I want with a band, else it's actually still way too loud, especially in the area on stage! Junior 1
I have a Valve Junior head with a 10" cab and it gets way too loud in my 12'x 12' space! The Gretta only has a 4" speaker, but with an external cab I bet you're right. That sucka will get loud!
Junior 1
The Greta has a 12AT7 power tube and a 12AX7 preamp tube. Odd!
Caevan O’Shite
I know that it's a MUCH more expensive amp- with a bit different goal- but, check THIS out for a very low-watt (4 watts with both output-tubes, 2 watts with one), oddball output-tubed amp: (I also want the 2x12 speaker-cab used in this demo, for my own amp) [video:youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gj1sxPseHV0 Ask yourself- What Would Ren and Stimpy Do? ~ Caevan James-Michael Miller-O'Shite ~ _ ___ _ Leprechaun, Esquire _ ___ _
Dannyalcatraz
As I watched the first half of this, I kept thinking of the immoral words of the late, great Frank Zappa: SHUT UP AND PLAY YER GUITAR! Nice amp, though! Sturgeon's 2nd Law, a.k.a. Junior 1
That's the way I think a Greta will be used. I saw some pictures online of the inards. Very simple with a tiny magnet speaker. It's a simple quiet practice amp with some tube tone at low volumes. It's cool looking and fun like a Pignose.
Guitarzan
i like the idea, but i hate tiny speakers. i prefer headphones if i am trying to be quiet, if it is a wattage issue the Traynor Darkhorse 15h has a 2 watt mode ( 12au7 )and a Celestion greenback 1x12...that is "watt" i want! http://www.soundclick.com/bands/pagemusic.cfm?bandID=193274 rock it, i will
super combinator
The Greta does have a connection so you can hook up an external cab as well........ unless they are priced silly here I will likely give one a try!!
Junior 1
I'm going to give one a try also, but I'm going to wait for some kind of discount from Musicians Friend. They do that 10% or 15% thing a lot. I have 10" and 12" cabs I can plug it into. Using the 4" speaker will work for late night stuff.
Guitarzan
i think they are 275.00 http://www.soundclick.com/bands/pagemusic.cfm?bandID=193274 rock it, i will
Junior 1
They're $200 at Musicians Friend. I think last week, you could have gotten $20 off with coupon code. I was dissapointed in the speaker. My Pignose has a more robust 5" speaker. The magnet on the Greta is tiny. I know it's supposed to mimic an old tube radio, but come on!

simpleman3441
From what I recall when I was researching amps a year or two ago, wattage has next to nothing to do with how much volume an amp is capable of producing. I'm not an amp expert by any means and I have great respect for those who are. (I sometimes think Myles Rose is a voodoo warlock.) I believe I read that the difference in volume between two similarly designed amplifiers one with 50 watts and the other 100 is only 3 dB, the smallest noticeable difference in volume to the human ear. Tubes and speakers are were said to be of bigger import in terms of volume. I have an AC4TV which has switchable wattage between 4, 1, and even 1/2 watt. Even on the 1/2 watt setting with the volume only up enough for it to make the quietest noise possible, I still get complaints from the old lady that lives beneath me! That might have more to say about the floor construction, but I'm still able to get quite a hefty noise when I'm recording it on the 1/2 watt setting at only half volume. IIRC, wattage was said to have more impact on tone than anything. Higher wattage gives more headroom and (this part I'm even less confident about) allows the amplifier to reproduce the tone of your guitar more transparently, true to the original signal. At the end of my reading, I came to the conclusion that I was mostly interested in low watt amplifiers and that I would probably never have reason to purchase another amp over 30 watts unless I came across a JTM45 for an exceptional price. (I already own a Bassman reissue.) Anyhow... Of all my amps, I prefer to use the AC4TV whenever possible.
