Not surprised, Danny. Once caught Steely Dan back in '72 on AB. If Clark didn't really understand the music, he clearly understood the market, and nobody was beneath a spot on the show.

I must have spent hours as a kid with my ass planked down in front of the tube watching Bandstand. Over the years, we sometimes would poke fun at some of it( "It's got a nice beat and you can dance to it. I'll give it an 85, Dick!")but his impact on popular music remains unmatched. Many a now long gone rock "icon" had their first national exposure on Bandstand, and to many pop artists, getting on the show was tantamount to comics getting on Carson.

I don't know if he understood music or not, but what he really DID understand was teenagers, & what they wanted to hear, dance to & incorporate into teenage pop culture. I think he really loved that world.

There is a reason he was "The World's Oldest Teenager", after all. The man had a deep understanding of pop culture.

But my observation was less about his uncanny perspective, and more about his sheer POWER. He got acts on daytime & prime time TV that were simply far beyond mainstream (like the Beasties) or otherwise unacceptable (like many black or mixed-race groups). Arguably, nobody else on that side of the camera had that kind of pull.

And, to hear the stories, he treated every last one of them with respect.

Class, vision & power- a rare combo.
