SK in Canada

Hey everyone! I've been MIA for a while, so here's an Ontario/Mid-Atlantic KC mini-hang report (a little breaking news for the old KC gang or anyone interested.)

A JAZZ Dash 8 recently landed on the Timmins tarmac and out stepped SK. No lie. :)

Steve was leaving Toronto when several elements amazingly came together. I won't confess how I arranged this "small detour", but I will say that I had a blast showing him the sights, arranging a concert and an impromptu gig, playing roadie, fielding phone calls, opening my doors for a guest appearance on local cable TV, even sharing the stage. But some of the best fun for me was after hours, playing duo piano. I can't remember ever having this much fun with 4 hands. He took my lame excuses and turned them into brilliant intentions.

Thanks to SK whose live music is even more of a trip than I could have imagined. Steve, you now have many friends and fans north of the Arctic Watershed. We want you back.

Sue rules!!

Indeed she DOES.

Great to see the reminders of that trip. And there's no way I can adequately express how welcoming and supportive Sue (and even her whole town) was of me.

Towns tout their landmarks, their scenery, their history, etc. In NYC, (to me) it's the energy. In Timmins, it's the people... they listened to every note and made me want to give my best. A more open minded group hungry for creativity I haven't seen.

And Sue as for your "lame excuses", it's time people know that you're quite the pianist (she's been holding out on all of us.) She can sight read anything at tempo with feeling and great musical instincts, knows a million songs, an excellent, intuitive teacher and even has improvisational chops. Not exaggerating. (And as "roadie"- she even provided her nice Gem keyboard for a gig.)

I understand there are recordings of the stuff although I haven't heard them yet. Some of it was solo acoustic piano and a live solo keyboard gig, another a larger scale concert. The bassoonist played a couple songs at the restaurant gig. (At one point, I appropriately picked the obscure Tadd Dameron tune "If You Could See Me Now.")

Again, Sue made it happen... a totally positive experience I won't forget. Tell the folks in Timmins I'll be back. :) (note to self: check out summer sales on winter clothes.)

So cool! That sounds like a lot of musical activity in a short amount of time.

Steve you've been busy travelling. It looks like. No wonder you've disappeared for a bit.

Good to hear from you again Sue!

That is awesome - wish I could have been there. Great to hear from both of you.

How did she find a paper bag big enough to carry it in? :D

Did the Orillia invitation get lost in the mail?
Until fairly recently, I hadn't heard of Timmins. This is the first I've heard of Orillia. If Sue had been given a head's up, I wouldn't be surprised if she could have set that up too.

Orillia's gift to the world: Gordon Lightfoot.

I must admit when I saw the topic I thought it was about Saskatchewan :D

Hi Sue! Nice to hear from you!

I tried to find the photo of the Richmond Meetup when SK brought all his gear in one tiny, wrinkled, dog-eared, brown paper bag.

We all got a good laugh out of that...

Until he sat down to play.

SK - YOU RAWK. :thu::taz:

Tom

PS - I have other photos... And for a small fee, I will refrain from posting them!

Thanks Tom - hey YOU SWING!

The paper bag days are over. With the cheaper paper these days, I'm not into double bagging a 5 lb. controller. ;)

Share, please!! :D

When possible, will do... we're waiting on an elusive soundman to get back to us with his in-house recording. And the TV station gave me a DVD - missing the audio! Waiting on that too.

I'm dying to know what was in that brown paper bag... 5 lb controller? Which one? What else? Storytime, please!
It's "the" Roland PC-200. I got it in the 90's. Pitch bend and aftertouch, run by power cable or batteries. And it still works!

Other contents of the bag: (feels like I'm back at Canadian Customs) an old sound module with my tweaked patches, instrument cable and a pack of gum.

What, no MD 20/20?

Haha, I had to look that one up. Reminds me I should apologize to SK for terrorizing him with cheap boxed wine. It just never ran out.

Speaking of the Paper Bag Legends, I've got a couple of those pics. Man, I remember really wanting to attend but couldn't get away. I think at the time, Tom was considering a live feed and I stood by on Skype waiting for the bell to ring.. Uh-huh. Oh well.

Hey, what are the odds of arranging another Richmond Meetup? Maybe early summer? (wheels turning here..)

I really appreciate the welcome. Nice to be back.

Not to hijack, BTW, but just as a heads up to the southern Ontario folk since their attention is gotten, I'll be playing in Toronto in a little over a month - I have an 'appropriate' posting in the shameless plugs forum.
