Why not get an XK1 instead? I think it would sound better than an XK2. I also think weighs less.

Too much stuff, too little time, too few gigs, should spend more time practicing...!  🙄

main instruments: Nord Stage 3 compact, Yamaha CP88, Kurzweil PC4, Viscount KeyB Legend Live

When in doubt go to the pros. What should I be paying for a used XK2 in excellent condition.Im thinking in the 800-1000 range. Yes/no??

Does it include the expression pedal? How about a case?

A quick search on eBay shows $750, $895, and $1,100 Buy-It-Now pricing. Shipping is additional.

I would start at $750 (or less) because:

1. eBay has one for $750

2. the XK2 is 3 generations behind (XK-3, XK-3c, and SK1)

3. it doesn't come with an expression pedal (I'm assuming.)

4. $750 saves you $50 from what you were prepared to pay anyway

Good luck!

Tom

I once had a XK2 that I got super cheap and in some ways I wish I had kept it for a controller. The keys felt rather nice actually.

As for the sounds, I dare not get started on that again because the last time I commented on it the brain police came out in full force.

If you already have a Ventilator, get the XK2 for no more than $600 . If you don't have a Vent and don't want to get one, get the XK1 or even a used XK3c for a few $$$ more.

I liked the XB-2 better than the XK-2. (I am probably deeply in the minority)

The XK-2 I played had no balls. But it was running through a Leslie 302. I didn't like it either. That rig sucked. My XB-2 and leslie 860 or 122 would eat it alive.

My problem was probably with the 302. The 302 was a leslie but I think it only had a rotating horn and a bass sim circuit or some nonsense. There were no louvres on the bottom sides. It sounded weak.

Yeah the 302 is an anchor, nothing more. You really couldn't even part it out. The XK2 was great for its time, I preferred it to the VK7, but I always used something else for the leslie sim, either a real leslie, or a Dynacord CL333, or a Korg G4. Same for the XM1. The XK2 and Xk1 have great keybeds, and I prefer them to the XK3s. You could still do worse for a clone, but having a Ventilator would make a night and day difference in the XK2.

I've heard flushing toilets with a better Leslie sim than the XK-2

Was that stereo or mono?

I always flush in stereo. It doesn't really matter to me what my flush sounds like in the room, as long as it's satisfying sounding in my stall. It makes it more inspiring when I take a shit. :rawk:

I depends on if you are flushing for your own pleasure or if your performance is for the listening pleasure of an audience.

Buy it for $600.... then use it for a controller for the VB3... That will kick the ass of the SK1....

For an XK-2 in good condition with an expression pedal, $600 is probably the highest I would go also. I just picked one up myself, actually. It is a solid, well built (e.g. heavy) keyboard that also doubles very well as a MIDI controller, which works great for me in my studio. The presets will need tweaking, as the factory sounds are a little weak, but it sounds very good after editing them. The leslie sim on the XK-2 is definitely it's achilles heel, even after tweaking it. Plan on adding either a real leslie or an external sim, like the Vent.

I also have a (now defunct) XB-2, and an Oberheim OB-3 Squared, which sonically is surprisingly good and compares well against both of these Hammonds, including even the on-board leslie sim. The biggest drawbacks of the OB-3 Squared are the extremely limited tweak-ability, and the fact that it has a very ordinary non-velocity sensing keybed. But if you are tight on funds, then picking one up on Ebay for $400 should be fine.

Welll Im happy I started such an infamous thread. Got the XK2 through trades etc really for about $500 and have the same mixed feelings as the posters have brought out. Weak Leslie sim, great keybed action. I want to realign the presets so the ones I use are in1 bank. Any help there? Thanks again gents. If Jack helped you off a horse...would you helpJack.....

What if the Hokey Pokey IS what its all about?

You just have to copy them to bank 1. That is; edit > dial in destination bank & patch > write.

If I remember correctly.

Used to have a XB-1, which is the same instrument except for the keys and some pieces of wood.
