mate stubb
Got a chance to go to a Here Come The Mummies show last night with my entire family. I hadn't heard of these guys until my daughter turned me on to them a few weeks ago. They rocked a packed small concert hall and turned us all in to instant fans. If you have never heard of them, picture a 9 piece super tight funk band with full horn sections, all dressed in mummy garb. I've been in big horn show bands, and these guys took it to another level. Here's an example of their er, unique humor in a live Bob and Tom broadcast: [video:youtube] Moe --- "I keep wanting to like it's sound, but every demo seems to demonstrate that it has the earth-shaking punch and peerless sonics of the Roland Gaia. ABECK
I hope those outfits have zippers! There's something about a group of mummies all wearing headphones that is simply hilarious. Great band.
mate stubb
I learned something else last night - how to finally look cool wearing a keytar. Turns out, all you need is to dress like a mummy. JpScoey
I hope those outfits have zippers! I went on a fancy-dress New Years Eve pub-crawl some years ago & a mate went as a mummy - wrapped head-to-toe in bandages. It was only after about 3 pints of ale & he needed to go to he toilet that he realised he'd not planned ahead !... kanker.
I saw them a few years ago. After the second song, the gimmick wore off and they just sounded like every other wannabe Funkadelic to me, but with cornier lyrics. :idk A ROMpler is just a polyphonic turntable. Funk is not supposed to be tight and clean. It's greasy and dirty...hence "funky". Morizzle
We've got this showband in Germany who play in a comedy show hosted by an incredibly annoying comedian. The band is top notch, incredibly tight, some of Germany's finest session musicians play there. However, the studio recordings they put out are clinically clean and overproduced... Meh. Doesn't meet the sound aesthetics of funk and soul music for my ears. [video:youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ZTwiU5MzW8&feature=youtu.be It's not a clone, it's a Suzuki. I saw the Mothership land at Madison Square Garden during that same tour in '78 and I still haven't recovered! Instrumentation is meaningless - a song either stands on its own merit, or it requires bells and whistles to cover its lack of adequacy, much less quality. - kanker

I don't consider them funk, no matter their self-designation as such and I like ToP I disagree with the notion that funk cannot be tight. Tight or loose, it is all good - funk is big enough to encompass both. Do you consider EW&F funky? They are very tight, but still swing. retrokeys
Didn't James Brown fine his band when they weren't tight? Don't think anybody ever told "The Godfather" that he wasn't funky. Ayway I think the Mummies give new meaning to the term "(w)rap music:
