JimboK
I have access to a cheaply priced SL-880 from a buddy who no longer uses it. I would want it as a second weighted board (so I can keep one at my alternate practice facility). As such, I don't need the sounds at all (but if it sounded okay, then all the better), I just need the keybed to midi out to a Kronos. Does anyone have any input on this board as a weighted board? Would I be tossing money out the window or would it work for this. Being discontinued, I cannot find much on it... I guess with the SL880 at 44lbs, the Casio will be the travel deck huh? Any input appreciated. Korg Kronos 2 61, Kronos 1 61, Dave Smith Mopho x4, 1954 Hammond C2, Wurlitzer 200A, Yamaha Motif 6, Casio CDP-100, Alesis Vortex Wireless, too much PA gear! Bill H.
I used one from four to five nights a week for years with no problems. The keys are nice and long, but the action is on the light side for a hammer action board. I liked that about it when I was putting in five hours a night, but it's something to be aware of if you're heavy handed. Speaking of being heavy handed, users who are can break parts of the action. I never did, but it's something to check out before you buy it. Midi is cumbersome and limited. I just set it to output on Channel 1 and let whatever it was hooked up to do the rest. Being just a little over four feet long, it's actually pretty easy to move around. I never got a case for mine. I'd just sling it under one arm and throw it in the back seat or trunk. e-keys
Our church has had one for years. Good solid basic board with action as Bill says. We have had no probs. If you get it, at some point you might want to buy a back up power supply for good measure. Will cost about 30 bucks.
JimboK
Sensitive power supplies huh? Okay, thanks for the tip. Cumbersome midi isn't a problem as I need, as Bill does, a single channel to push out. I'll inquire further and take a look.... Analogaddict
I have one in my studio. It's quite nice, I replaced a newer Fatar with it and have no regrets.
RABid
I had one for a few years. When rearranging my keyboards I turned it up on its end to lean it against the wall. Something popped inside. It's the only keyboard I ever had that did that. I could not get it apart to see what snapped but it did mess up the keybed. I gave it away. This post edited for speling. 888000000
To me the keys feels nice.It has 4 preset buttons. But you have to let go of the keys in order to change a preset. Thats one thing i don't like. http://setribute.wordpress.com/
reidmc
I always have liked the action of that board, particularly for acoustic piano parts, though organ and fast synth parts are (to say the least) challenging. I have one (mint) for sale (in Minnesota). "The Doomer allows the player to do things beyond which are possible without the accessory."
