OT: Best Buy is still in trouble

ProfD

Recommended Posts

It appears Best Buy is still struggling to make ends meet as competitors steal their customers:

Clonk

So, despite some stores having an MI department, I doubt anybody will walk in and lay hands on a Kronos unless it happens to be some new DVD or cell phone model.

Seriously, I would hate to see Best Buy go belly up. I dig it as a big box electronics store. YMMV.

Best Buy is sure handy to have. Recently the Best Buy across from my office was the only place within 70 miles I found I could walk in and buy a 25' MIDI cable off the shelf.

Plus that is about the only place I found I can do my Christmas shopping for my kids. Maybe if I didn't wait for the last week to get it done.

Closing 50 locations isn't a bad idea. They overbuilt. Good heavens, there's at least 6 here in the Portland metro area, and Portland isn't that big.

In contrast there's just one Fry's, and every time I'm in there it's packed.

There's always going to be a need for retail electronics stores. It's just finding the right mix of electronics to sell in them with online shopping so prevalent - at competitive prices.

I don't think Best Buy has the right mix at present, nor the right prices.

With online vendors dropping stuff at my door next day, no charge for shipping or tax, and every color, length, option I can want, I have no idea how a place like Best Buy stays open at all, to me this is the first step to goodbye, I'm even buying socks online now, socks! I really see there being just one place to buy everything soon- Amazon, with a splash of eBay.

Yeah, online is great, but sometimes you need shit TODAY.

Like me....I needed that Apple CCK Camera kit so I could interface with my rig, and I needed it tonite so I could program it for tomorrow's gig.

Of course, I bought it at RadioShack cuz I could walk there during lunch.

Online shopping certainly puts brick and mortar operations in a choke hold.

But, IMO, there will always be a segment of people who enjoy going to a physical location and being able to look around, touch and feel before they buy. The immediacy of walking out with the merchandise has a pyschological effect too.

Going shopping or to a movie theater is an experience.

When I was looking for a digital camera, I checked Newegg's site, read the reviews and decided what I wanted to buy. Then I called the local Best Buy and told them I would consider buying from them if they would match the Newegg price. The girl that answered the phone checked the availability of the items in the bundle that newegg was offering and told me to "Come in, I have everything in the bundle and we will match the price."

Being camera stupid, neither me or the sales person knew that she had picked out a memory card that wouldn't fit the camera I was buying. A girl that knew a lot about cameras caught it before it was rung up and put the correct memory card with the bundle.

I had to pay state sales tax, but no shipping, so it was a wash.

As Prof D said, some of us like to look at things to be sure its what we want. The girl in the camera department installed the batteries, put in the memory card for me, and I got to check out the screen and how to work it before I left the store.

I was completely satisfied with the transaction, not so sure that Best Buy was, but they took the deal......and my money.

Love the camera, works great!

Back in the day, before the digital media boom, there was a Best Buy near where I lived that had the best jazz selection in their CD department. Better than many boutique music shops I've been to. I'm talking everything from the typical classic jazz records to pretty rare and obscure titles and imports that probably don't exist in CD form anymore. Their selection of jazz seemed bigger than most other Best Buys' whole music department. It was really weird. I'm guessing the owner or whoever of that particular store happened to be a huge jazz fan and told their distributor "send me every jazz CD you've got."

Any of these big box stores are only as good as the employees and management team that work at a particular store.

I live close to a "University Town" and they get a lot of undergrads working in the local Best Buy. They hired people and put them in departments that they actually know something about and can help customers. I've read reviews on-line of Best Buy stores in other areas where the employees knew absolutely nothing.

Some time ago I wanted to get some new computer games like tank and air battles, for the fun of a modern shoot-em-up experience. I was also looking for an updated version of the old video games like Pacman and MS. Pacman. The undergrad the local Best Buy had on duty in the computer games department had experience with just about every game I picked up and I asked him his opinion. When I got my games home and starting playing them, he was totally honest. I didn't buy one "mistake". Amazing.

The Best Buy price was about $5 more (each) than on-line prices, but paying a few bucks more for his expertise was certainly well worth it.

Best Buy is not the devil, but Walmart.....

And I bet that 25' MIDI cable cost three times the price that you would pay on Amazon. That is why they are going belly-up. That, and their terrible customer service.

Actually I was surprised that the cost was not too bad. It was little less than $20 I THINK. Yes Amazon would have probably been cheaper but when someone slams a utility trunk lid shut with their Midi cable hanging out of the case they kind of have it coming I guess. :D

I'm glad to have a local electronics store but .... I hate the Geek Squad. Once they would not sell me a hard drive unless I brought in my Compaq and paid a $45 bench fee so they could decide whether or not to sell me the friggin' hard disk. They didn't want to sell it me if it wouldn't work due to system constraints. ... I think they just wanted $45.

I go to Office Depot or a local business called The Computer Deli for all my immediate computer needs.

Wait, Best Buy is the good guys now? Wasn't it just a couple years ago that they were the big box store invading town to put the mom-and-pops out of business?

No, that was Walmart.

While this is true, it does not have to be the case. A good, smart company can institute procedures to make all of their stores great. Also, they shouldn't expand their number of stores without this being implemented in the new ones as they go along.

That's were Best Buy gets their money, accessories and some types of supplies. Monster cables at retail price, ink cartridge prices off the charts. They are depending on their customers that buy a printer on sale to buy ink and toner at retail prices.

At least my local Best Buy has good customer service, especially when compared to Walmart, which is a block away. I've never seen a store where so many employees don't know anything and really don't want to be there. As they say, "You get what you pay for". Chisel your employees wages and you get the bottom of the employment barrel and workers that hate you.

We've got a Best Buy just down the street from where I work. I've bought a few things from there.. TV, USB Hard Drive, Memory stick, my wife's laptop. They actually have some rather knowledgeable people working at my local store.

Since they closed down the local Comp USA a while back, we've only had Best Buy, Office Depot, Office Max, Staples, H.H.Gregg, Sears, & Radio Shack.
