Big Daddy from Motown
Ok I'll put it in print, This is the year I finally learn how to play the upright bass. At the advanced age of 61 it's now or never.
Richard W
Go for it, but why "now or never?" The only time it's "never" should be when you're dead. Keep us posted on your progress. b5pilot
I've messed with them a couple of times before and if I could afford it I would love to get one and learn to get my rock-a-billy on! Maybe someday I hope. Lydian mode? The only mode I know has the words "pie ala" in front of it. http://www.myspace.com/theeldoradosband
Big Daddy from Motown
Thanks Bob, the dark side is right! As to the now or never I've had issues with Tendonotis and trigger finger, and the hands aren't what they used to be. This is the fourth time I've bought one. The first was a Kay I bought for $150, after a week the guy wanted it back . The second one was an Ampeg Baby Bass, I know I should of kept it but i hated the sound. The third one was a czeck plywood bass that never played well and tore up my hands about 7 years ago. The current one is an 1961 Epiphone B1, their bottom of the line bass. It plays great and sounds good too. I also finally found a good repair guy to work on and set up this one. Bob Gollihur
Great, it looks very nice, the few Epiphones I've heard were all cannons! As far as the Baby Bass, they were/are 'cool' but are thump machines- I sold mine in '80 and am still glad I did. I'm 61, too, and can relate to the hand issues, but I'll just play fewer notes per measure before I give it up. 1000 Upright Bass Links, Luthier Directory, Teacher Directory - http://www.gollihurmusic.com/links.cfm - Life is too short for bad tone -

Davo-London
I'd love a 3/4 URB, 4 string from maybe the 17th or 18th century. Italian or English would be nice. Cthulhu Fhtagn
Nah, late 19th. Central Europe. Those 17th century pieces are way overrated. Kinda like "vintage" Fender jazz basses. Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn
ShowScoop
i fell in love with the standup double bass in jazz band in middle school. You could have a one piece band with just a bass playing the root tonics and walking around the progressions. i love bass solos. a night in tunisia bass line
